The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu releases the TNEA eligibility criteria for admission to BTech programmes. Candidates who wish to be admitted to the participating colleges of TNEA must fulfil the TNEA eligibility criteria as prescribed by the admission authority.
The basic TNEA eligibility criteria are 45% marks in Class 12th for the general category and 40% marks for reserved categories. Get complete details on TNEA 2026 eligibility criteria for all categories below.

TNEA Eligibility Criteria 2026: The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu releases the TNEA eligibility criteria for admission to BTech programmes. Candidates who wish to be admitted to the participating colleges of TNEA must fulfil the TNEA eligibility criteria as prescribed by the admission authority. Registered candidates need to meet TNEA eligibility criteria 2026. Candidates who do not meet the TNEA 2026 eligibility criteria will not be taken into consideration for TNEA 2026 counselling. Candidates who are willing to apply for the counselling process can check the TNEA 2026 eligibility criteria.

TNEA Eligibility Criteria 2026: Nativity

Candidates are eligible to apply for admission through TNEA if they are:

  • Tamil Nadu candidates who have passed their Class VIII to Class XII standard in Tamil Nadu.
  • Children of Central Government Employees, irrespective of their nativity, provided their parents or guardians (only if both parents are not alive) have been serving in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years at the time of TNEA application form submission.
  • Sons/daughters of All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre officers.
  • Children of employees in the Public Sector or Government recognised institutions who at the time of TNEA 2026 application form submission, had been working in their organisations for the past five years are also eligible to apply, irrespective of their domicile.
  • Other state candidates who have studied from Class VIII to Class XII in Tamil Nadu can also apply for TNEA 2026.
  • Tamil Nadu native candidates who have passed any of the VIII, IX, X, XI and XII standards or their equivalent examinations from schools situated outside Tamil Nadu can also apply for TNEA.

TNEA Eligibility Criteria 2026: Qualifying Exams

Candidates are eligible to apply for TNEA counselling 2026 if they have cleared their HSC (Academic) or its equivalent with a minimum average percentage in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together as mentioned below:

Apart from the above-mentioned eligibility criteria, candidates will also be eligible for admissions if they have cleared any one of the HSC (Vocational Subject) as mentioned below with one of the Engineering related subjects namely Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry with a minimum average percentage put together as mentioned below:

Selection of candidates shall be made under seven categories namely OC, BC, BCM (BC Muslim), MBC & DNC, SC, SCA and ST following the rule of reservation of the Government of Tamil Nadu as follows:

TNEA 2026 Eligibility Criteria for Different Branches

If a candidate is applying based on branch, he/she should meet the following criteria:

For the Marine engineering branch

  • For the Marine Engineering Degree Programme, the candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examinations with Physics (P), Chemistry (C), Mathematics (M) and English as a separate subject with an average of not less than 60 % in PCM
  • A minimum of 50 % in English at the 10th or 12th standard is required for all the candidates

Apart from the above-mentioned candidates also need to meet the following criteria:

Other Requirements are as follows:

  • Maximum age limit 25 years
  • Minimum height 157 cm
  • Minimum weight 48 kg
  • Normal Color vision

Fitness Requirements-  Candidates must be declared physically fit on the production of a physical fitness certificate obtained from the Medical Officer authorised by the Director General of Shipping, failing which they will lose admission.

TNEA Eligibility Criteria 2026 for Female Candidates Applying for Mining Engineering

  • No woman should be employed in any part of a mine which is below ground
  • In any mine above ground except between the hours of 6 am and 7 pm
  • As per Coal Mines Regulation 1957, 86 no adolescent or woman shall descend or ascend a shaft in a cage or other means of conveyance unless accompanied by one or more adult males
  • They should satisfy the academic norms of Anna University

Q:   Is there any age limit to apply for TNEA?
A:

No, there is no age limit to apply for TNEA. However, note that the age limit is applicable at the time of admission based on the course and the institutes eligibility conditions. Therefore candidates must check the eligibility for the course and institute they are willing to apply for admission via TNEA 2026 counselling. TNEA stands for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions. The Directorate of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu conducts TNEA every year. It is an online counselling window. All Indian National candidates who wish to take admission to Government and Government Aided Engineering Colleges, University Departments and Constituent Colleges of Anna University, Annamalai University and for the seats surrendered by SelfFinancing Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu have to apply for TNEA counselling. TNEA counselling is a Unified Single Window Admission System for Indian Nationals only. The courses offered via this online counselling are BE/B.Tech and BE (sandwich) courses. TNEA counselling is conducted online in 4 rounds as per the Schedule. Candidates need to participate in corresponding rounds based on their rank.

Q:   I am from Bihar, Am I eligible for TNEA?
A:

Domicile residents of Tamil Nadu should have Qualified 8th,9th,10th, and 10+2th standard in the state. If the domicile Residents have completed above standard from Outside the state, then they will also be eligible provided They bring their copy of Navity Certificate. Children of government employees whose parents have been serving the state for the past 5 years from the Day of application will also be eligible even if they are not domicile residents. The children of All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre officers will also be termed eligible for Admission.

Q:   I have studied till 8th in Andhra and 9th,10th,11th,12th standards in Tamil Nadu. So will they consider me as local or not for TNEA?
A:
TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) is conducted by Anna University, Chennai for admission to various engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. To be considered as a "local candidate" for TNEA you must satisfy certain eligibility criteria set by Anna University. As per the TNEA eligibility criteria, a candidate can be considered as a local candidate if he/she meets any of the following criteria: Candidates who are Native of Tamil Nadu (i.e. who have studied in Tamil Nadu) or who have completed their qualifying examination from an institution located in Tamil Nadu. Children of Central Government Employees, who have been serving in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years at the time of submission of application, and whose parents' native is not Tamil Nadu. Children of employees in Public Sector or Government recognised institutions who at the time of submission of application for admission employed in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years. Based on the above eligibility criteria, if you have completed your 10th, 11th, and 12th standards in Tamil Nadu, then you can be considered as a local candidate for TNEA. However, if you do not meet any of the eligibility criteria mentioned above, you may not be considered as a local candidate for TNEA.
Q:   Is there any scholarship available in TNEA?
A:

Yes. The Government have ordered to grant Post Matric Scholarship to SC/SCA/ST candidates and SC/SCA converted Christians, whose parental annual income is less than INR 2,50,000/- from all the sources shall only be eligible. The eligible candidates have to submit income certificate obtained from appropriate authorities and get the Post Matric Scholarship from the colleges where they get admitted.

Q:   Is TNEA required at Sri Sai Ram Institute of Technology?
A:

Yes, candidates seeking admission in BE/ BTech courses have to register for TNEA Counselling after completing Class 12. Aspirants are alloted seat in the programme based on their Class 12 score during the TNEA Counselling. Once the seat is alloted, candidates have to pay a course fee to confirm their seat in the institute.
