For TNEA counselling, registered candidates are first ranked based on their class 12 marks, which is scaled down to 200. Based on their ranking in the TNEA merit list, engineering seats are allotted. Check TNEA marks v/s ranks details below.
TNEA Marks vs Ranks 2026: As per the previous year, we have prepared the TNEA 2026 marks vs rank list below. TNEA marks v/s ranks indicate what will be the rank of the candidate for their TNEA marks scaled down to 200 using the normalisation process.
Note that, in Tamil Nadu, candidates are allotted seats in BE/BTech, BE (Sandwich), and MTech Computer Science and Engineering (Integrated) courses offered by the Government and Government Aided Engineering Colleges, University Departments and Constituent Colleges of Anna University, and Annamalai University via TNEA counselling based on class 12 marks only. The candidates have to register for TNEA counselling with their class 12 marks. TNEA 2026 Normalisation Process and Ranking
Under Tamil Nadu state regulations (Act 3 of 2007 and G.O. No. 77), engineering admissions use a normalisation method to level the playing field. This process mathematically equates Class 12 marks from different educational boards (like CBSE, ICSE, or other state boards) to the standard of the Tamil Nadu State Board, ensuring a fair and balanced merit system for all applicants.
For example:
- If the highest mark secured by a student of the State Board of Tamil Nadu in Physics is 100 and the highest mark secured by a student of any other Board in the same subject is 90, both the highest marks will be considered to be equal to 100.
- If a student of the other Board secures 60 marks in Physics when the first mark in Physics in the same Board is 90, 60 marks will be considered to be equal to 66. 66 marks have arrived below:
(60/90) ∗ 100 = 66.66%
- After normalisation of marks in the relevant subjects in the qualifying examination conducted by different Boards, the qualified students shall be merged into a common merit list.
- In the case of candidates who have qualified from National Boards, namely CBSE and ISCE, the highest mark obtained in the relevant subject by the candidates at the National Level alone will be taken into consideration for normalisation.
- The Other Boards will be requested to furnish the maximum marks scored in the relevant subjects. In case such marks are not available before the preparation of the rank, the maximum marks scored in that Board will be considered as 100%.
- For minimum eligibility, normalised marks will not be considered.
TNEA 2026 Rank List
The overall rank and community-wise TNEA 2026 rank lists will be published on the Directorate of Technical Education website tneaonline.org. The college and the branch will be provisionally allotted through online TNEA counselling only, as per their choice, based on their overall rank and community rank.
The TNEA 2026 merit list will be prepared based on the total scaled marks of 200. In cases where more than one candidate has the same marks in the common merit list, the inter-se-merit among such candidates shall be determined in the order of priority as specified below.
- percentage of marks in Mathematics
- percentage of marks in Physics
- percentage of marks in the optional subject
- percentage of total marks in 12th Standard Examination
- date of birth (elder will be given preference)
- TNEA random number assigned (higher value will be given preference)
