The JEE Advanced exam is an unpredictable exam. The exam difficulty level ranges from moderate to difficult every year. Candidates who are aiming to qualify this exam must have an idea about what a safe score is to pass the exam, and also what a good score in JEE Advanced is that guarantees an IIT. The cutoff marks to pass the JEE Advanced exam are released with the JEE Advanced result. The cutoff marks are released for all categories of candidates. From the above table, we can draw the following conclusion about the safe score in the JEE Advanced exam:

  1. Between 2020 to 2022, the safe score, that is the minimum marks needed to pass the exam in aggregate, was between 15% to 17%.
  2. In 2023, the safe score to pass the JEE Advanced exam rose to 23.89%. This was a drastic rise from the previous years.
  3. In 2024, the safe score skyrocketed to 30.34%.
  4. In 2025, which was the most recent year of JEE Advanced, the safe score fell to 20.56%.

Thus, since 2023, the safe score in JEE Advanced has increased, with 2024 witnessing a big jump in the cutoff marks. Therefore, candidates should score at least 30% marks in the JEE Advanced exam to be on the safe side.

Safe score for JEE Advanced 2026: 30%. If the total marks in exam is 360, then candidates must try to score 108 marks and above.

What is a Good Score in JEE Advanced to Get an IIT - Previous Year Cutoff Marks Analysis

A good score to get into an IIT will depend on the IIT a candidate is aiming for. This is because all IITs have different standards when it comes to admission. For example, the cutoff for IIT Bombay for the Computer Science course will be very high as compared to the cutoff of any other IIT.

In the table below, we have provided the highest closing ranks in the last JoSAA counselling round of all the 23 IITs and marks out of 360 for the corresponding ranks. This will provide an idea about:

  • What was the maximum rank up to which IITs accepted admission, and how many marks are needed to get that rank.
  • Candidates can thus check the good marks needed for admission to all 23 IITs.
IIT Closing rank as per last year Marks out of 360
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay 8343 234 to 208
Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad 10043 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Madras 10290 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur 10482 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati 10727 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar 11066 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee 11130 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Indore 11274 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi 12217 120 to 110
Indian Institute of Technology Goa 13451 109 to 105
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur 13685 109 to 105
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi 14447 109 to 105
Indian Institute of Technology Ropar 14480 109 to 105
Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar 16268 104 to 100
Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati 16548 104 to 100
Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad 16753 104 to 100
Indian Institute of Technology Patna 16815 104 to 100
Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai 17478 99 to 94
Indian Institute of Technology Mandi 17491 99 to 94
Indian Institute of Technology Jammu 18156 99 to 94
Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur 18310 99 to 94
Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad 18368 99 to 94
Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad 18979 99 to 94

From the above table, it is clear that:

  • The minimum marks needed to get an IIT range from 94 to 234 marks. A -tier IITs like IIT B and IIT M demand higher marks between 110 to 240.
  • All IITs close their admission at ranks below 19000.
Good score for JEE Advanced 2026: 95+ marks. Last year, all IITs closed their intake in the general category at ranks below 19000.

To conclude:

200+ marks Excellent marks - top tier IITs guaranteed
110 to 200 marks Good marks to get any IIT, other than the top tier ones
100 marks to 109 marks Safe marks to pass the exam

Candidates should ideally try to solve at least 3 previous year JEE question papers per week. However, candidates can also increase the frequency of this to 5 to 6 papers per week, one month before the exam.
