One of the oldest and classical languages which belong to the Italic branch of the Indo-European Languages was originally spoken in Rome. It was through the dominance of the Roman Republic that Latin became the dominant language spoken in Italy. It is through Latin, that much English has developed as a language as Latin roots are used in the English descriptions of Theology, Sciences, Medicine, and Law. Latin is the official language of Vatican City, one of the holiest places on the globe. There was Old Latin (75 BC), which had been standardized to Classica Latin to the Late Latin (3rd Century) and it was through Latin that its descendants are languages such as Italian, Sardinian, Venetian, Neapolitan, French, Romansch, Spanish, Portuguese and many more.

Latin has played a significant influence on the English language at all stages of its insular development. It was during the 16th to the 18th century, English writers made new words from Latin and Greek words which were dubbed ‘inkhorn terms. Throughout European history, the teachings of Latin were considered crucial for those who wished to join literate classes.

In order to learn Latin, students are taught the basics and the main aim of any course is aimed at developing the student's ability to understand, speak, read and write Latin. It may be noted, that Latin is used in various specific contexts, but there are not many native speakers. There are seven types of Latin including Old Latin, Classical Latin, Vulgar Latin, Medieval Latin, Renaissance Latin, New Latin, and Contemporary Latin.
