Criminology is the study of crime and is an interdisciplinary field in behavioural and social sciences and is studied in order to help the law. The role of Sociologists, Psychologists, Philosophers, Psychiatrists and Social Anthropologist come into play. Criminology is derived from the Latin word crimen, which means ‘accusation’. In simple terms, Criminology is the study of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Criminology is a branch of Sociology, however, it has been studied in one way or the other for thousands of years. Other than Sociologists, Forensic Scientists also play a major part in Criminology.

The role of a criminologist is to look at every aspect and concept of deviant behaviour which looks at a broader aspect. Criminology covers specific areas such as:

Crime Frequency

Locations of Crime

Causes of Crime

Types of Crime

Consequences of Crime

Social Impact of Crime

Government Reactions

Individual Reaction

Social Reaction

Social Consequences of Crime

Criminologists are people working and researching on all the ins and outs, looking for patterns in search of finding the criminal/perpetrator. There are detectives, who are experts in the field and have gained plenty of experience in the field. Investigations are conducted along with analytical and forensic research. Criminology is not all about solving the crime, but the pattern, methods and measures that were taken to commit the crime.
