Medieval Philosophy
Jasmine Dang AroraDeputy Manager-Content
Medieval Philosophy covers and focuses on the philosophical aspects which existed during the middle ages, which extends from the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century to the Renaissance in the 15th century. The Philosophy in Europe had been of Greek thinkers, however, as Christianity swept through the Roman Empire, Philosophy had dramatically changed. The Medieval Era was divided into two main periods, the Early Middle Ages and the Golden Age. The works of Aristotle and Plato were rediscovered, translated, and studied in the Early Middle Ages or Medieval Era.
The questions raised and problems discussed through the medieval era are related to faith, reason, belief, existence, and simplicity of God, the purpose of theology and metaphysics, and the problems of knowledge. Medieval Philosophy lays heavy emphasis on Theology, as it was used to address theological questions and points of doctrine. Most of the matters discussed were highly controversial as there was the study of the Dark Ages after the collapse of the Roman Empire, monasteries were limited and the theories used by Plato and Aristotle.
Medieval Philosophy can be studied in various courses and programmes which are offered by Universities and Colleges. Medieval Philosophy is not taught entirely as a programme, but students can opt to specialise in the subject of doing their Master of Philosophy or their PhD. Students are taught subjects such as Issues for Medieval Philosophers, Faith, Certainty, Divine Illumination, Evil, Free, Will, Foreknowledge, Positive and Negative Religious Language, and much more.
