The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an important exam for law aspirants. By scoring good marks in CLAT, one could get admission to the top law institutes of the country. This article discusses some of the important topics and reference books for preparing and scoring well in the CLAT exam. Let’s begin with the pattern of the exam. Every student needs to know the pattern of the exam before preparation. The exam structure of CLAT Exam 2025 consists of 120 questions of one mark each. Among all sections, the Constitutional Law has more weightage in the exam every year.

Constitutional Law 

In this section, questions will be asked based on LLB subjects. From Constitutional Law, important topics are as follows:

  • Constitution of India
  • Judicial and Quasi-Judicial bodies which include Supreme Court, High Court, District Court and Tribunals
  • Elections of President, Vice President and Legislative Assembly
  • Rights and Duties
  • Official Languages and Panchayati Raj Acts, etc.

Law of Contracts 

From the Law of Contracts section, some of the important topics are: Nature of Contracts

  • Quasi Contracts
  • Contracts Formation
  • Void and Illegal Contracts
  • Contracts Discharge
  • Agency Contracts and Insurance – Guarantee, etc.

Law of Torts 

Understand and learn the law of torts clearly as some of the high-weightage questions in the exam come from this section. Some of the important topics are:

Freeze option in CLAT Counselling means accept the NLU seat, lock it, and opt-out of the upgrade process. In this case, the fee becomes non-refundable and has to be paid before the last date. The candidate is removed from the counseling process for future rounds.

Yes, the CLAT counselling fee is refundable if no seat is allotted or if a student withdraws before the final date. A penalty of INR 5,000 may be applied if a seat is frozen and later withdrawn after May 30th.

There will be a total of 5 rounds for CLAT 2026. Students who make it to the merit list and who receive an invitation via email/SMS can register and pay the counselling fee. Students have to pay a fee of INR 30,000 for General and INR 20,000 for ST/SC/OBC/BC/EWS/PwD, for CLAT examination.

The NLU Shimla CLAT Cutoff 2026 has been released for round 2 for multiple categories under both the All India and Home State quota. The cutoff was out in the form of opening and closing ranks.
