JEE Advanced 2026 preparation: Qualifying IIT JEE, one of the most difficult exams in the world, is not an easy feat. It requires years of study and planning. To help candidates prepare for this exam, Shiksha provides some very useful tips recommended by previous year toppers and subject experts.

Given here are some important tips that will help you in preparing for JEE Adv exam.

Understand Syllabus & Exam Pattern

It is very important to understand the JEE Adv syllabus and exam pattern before you begin your preparation. The syllabus consists of topics from class 11 and 12 however, the difficulty level of the exam is way ahead of class 11 and 12. For this, students must build understanding of the basic concepts using the right study material. The syllabus of JEE Advanced is vast and can only be completed if you start your preparation as early as possible. It is very important to complete syllabus as all topics in JEE Advanced are important. This is because, there are questions in the exam that carry concepts application from various chapters of JEE Advanced syllabus. Therefore, to solve one question, candidates must have a knowledge of various topics. Hence it is important to complete the entire syllabus of JEE Advanced with time for revision before the exam.

Also, the exam pattern of IIT JEE Advanced is very uncertain. There will be MCQs, matching type and NAV questions but the number of questions and marking scheme is not fixed. Candidates must be prepared for this uncertainty.  

Make a Weekly Plan

Don't plan for a day because it might not be completed due to an unavoidable event on that day (you might be sick). If you plan for a week, you have other days to make up for it. Make a reasonable plan for JEE Advanced 2026 that you can complete by end of the week. If plan is feasible, you must not postpone it to the following week.

Refer NCERT Books for concepts

Your preparation should begin with the NCERT books. Read these books carefully and complete all back exercises. Try 'example problems' as well for more practice with objective questions. Keep in mind that reading and comprehending NCERT books are not same thing.

Create a Revision Strategy

You need to keep revising what you have studied. Concepts and basics of JEE Advanced must be on the tip of your tongue so that you are able to solve the questions in the exam with speed and accuracy. Also, form a strategy to revise. Do not invest equal amount of time in revising all the topics. Revise topics that you think you need more attention to regularly. Make notes while revising to retain the concepts in your memory. Check your performance after each mock exam and analyse what mistakes and patterns you are repeating and work on them.

Do Your Best to Prepare for Board Exams

All will go in vain if you don't score the minimum perentage required in class 12 for IIT admissions. You must give your all to the Board along with JEE advanced preparation. Unlike JEE Mains, the Board Exam contains subjective questions, so get in habit of answering them.

Which is more important: How long you studied or how much you studied?

If you feel you need to invest more time on a topic than increase your study time. However, if you waste your time in procrastination, then how long you study will not matter. Everything comes down to effective study. Utilise the time you study to prepare diligently without any distractions and with complete concentration.

Learn from Your Test Mistakes

Many tests are available, both offline and online. It is critical to develop habit of taking tests in the same format regularly. What is more important is that you learn from your mistakes in JEE Main and JEE Advanced Mock Tests. If you can correct those errors after each test, your performance will gradually improve all the way through. This is only way to bridge the gap between preparation and performance while also improving exam temperament.

Do Not Store Unnecessary Books

Start with the NCERTs to get hold of concepts and basics, and collect books that are good in the following categories: have a simple language and cover JEE Advanced syllabus have ample amount of question banks books that are topper recommended and experts trust books that work for you even if not recommended by experts and toppers.

Solve Previous Year Papers and Mock Tests

JEE Adv previous years paper and mock test is crucial in the exam preparation. Previous year papers gives you a clear understanding of the difficulty level of the exam, which helps in strategising your JEE Adv preparation. Additionally, mock tests gives you real-exam practice which helps in time-management and learning from mistakes.
