IIT Guwahati Hosts Japanese Parliamentary Delegation to Foster Research and Innovation Partnerships

A Japanese Parliamentary delegation recently visited IIT Guwahati to explore opportunities for strengthening research and innovation collaborations between India and Japan.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati hosted a distinguished Japanese delegation led by His Excellency Fukushiro Nukaga, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan. The delegation included four Members of Parliament, the former Japanese Ambassador to India, senior officials from the Government of Japan, and representatives from the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi. Additionally, 22 delegates from various Japanese industries were part of the visit.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati welcomed the delegation and presented an overview of the instituteβs vision, global collaborations, achievements, and commitment to advancing scientific and technological research. Speaking during his address Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, βWe deeply value Japanβs longstanding friendship and its forward-looking approach to collaboration. IIT Guwahati is committed to working closely with our Japanese counterparts to tackle global challenges through shared knowledge, innovation, and mutual respect.β
In his address to the gathering, His Excellency Fukushiro Nukaga highlighted the strong democratic values and common developmental aspirations shared by India and Japan. He stressed the significance of collaboration in emerging technologies, human resource development, and the pursuit of sustainable growth. He called for enhanced cooperation through research, education, cultural exchange, and innovation-driven partnerships.
After the interaction, the delegation visited key research facilities at IIT Guwahati. At the Centre for Nanotechnology, they toured the advanced cleanroom facility, similar to the one being developed at the upcoming Tata Semiconductor plant in Assam, a project actively supported by IIT Guwahati. The delegates also explored several indigenous research innovations and ongoing projects in the field of nanotechnology.
The delegation later toured the Technology Incubation Centre and Research Park, where they were introduced to groundbreaking work in Artificial Intelligence and healthcare technologies. Start-ups incubated at the institute showcased a diverse range of medical and sustainable devices, with some of these innovations presented as mementos to the Speaker.

The event also included one-on-one discussions between the Japanese delegates, IIT Guwahati officials, and representatives from the Government of Assam. These conversations aimed at strengthening existing collaborations and aligning future efforts with the shared vision of increasing Indo-Japan student and research exchanges to 50,000, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan.
