The National Testing Agency has conducted the JEE Main 2026 January session Paper 1 (BE/BTech) exam from January 21 to 24. Two more Paper 1 shifts will be held on January 28, while Paper 2 is scheduled for January 29. Based on the analysis of the exams held so far, this year’s JEE Main is being termed one of the toughest in recent years. JEE Main 2026 Exam LIVE: NTA has scheduled JEE Main 2026 January session exam on January 21, 22, 23, 24, 28 and 29. Of the scheduled days exam has been successfully conducted on January 21, 22, 23 and 24. In all four days, a total of 10,36,211 candidates have appeared. Until now, the exam has been rated as moderate to tough in all the shifts. The difficulty level may vary in all shifts, but most shifts have been challenging with lengthy questions in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Difficulty Level of Questions in JEE Man 2026 January Session
According to the analysis, the January session featured only around 10 to 15 easy questions out of 75 in most shifts. Physics emerged as the most challenging subject in many papers, with several questions close to the JEE Advanced level. Chemistry was also rated tough due to statement-based and multi-concept questions, while Mathematics remained lengthy but mostly moderate.

- Toughest Shift: January 23, Shift 2 is widely regarded as the most challenging due to an exceptionally difficult Mathematics section and the conceptual depth required across all subjects.

In the JEE Main 2026 January session, the Chemistry section was no longer the traditional "easy and scoring" one. It was on the other hand, it had many complex questions with multi-concept problems.
In fact, unlike previous years where direct NCERT-based questions dominated, the 2026 papers featured many statement-based questions. Some questions included up to six or seven statements that required individual verification, making them both tricky and time-consuming.

JEE Main 2026 January Exam So Far: Trend Breaker
The JEE Main 2026 January session, which began on January 21, has emerged as a significant "trend breaker" due to unexpected shifts in difficulty distribution and subject-wise weightage. As of January 25, 2026, the exam has challenged traditional preparation methods by prioritising complex, multi-concept problems over straightforward, formula-based questions.
This year, there have been some observations:
- Chemistry beyond NCERT: Experts report that solely relying on NCERT textbooks is no longer sufficient for high scores.
- JEE Advanced level questions: The 2026 papers feature a higher frequency of mixed-concept questions and patterns typically seen in JEE Advanced.
- Time Management: Almost all shifts so far have been reported as "moderate but very lengthy". Many well-prepared candidates could only attempt 50–55 questions, making speed and selectivity the primary factors for success.
JEE Main difficulty level is similar to class 12 board exams. Syllabus of JEE Main is similar to class 11 and 12 syllabus. The questions asked in exam are tricky and need an in-depth understanding of subjects. They need to have conceptual understanding of every topic to score well in exam.
