JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is aimed at selecting the best candidates from across the country. In the current scenario, the exam is being conducted in two phases, JEE Main for all the candidates and JEE Advanced for top 2.2 lacs of JEE Main.
The eligibility for JEE-Advanced is that candidate must be among top 2.2 lakh students in JEE-Main. From this year, Class XII marks will not be required for JEE Main & Advanced rank determination.
The exam is considered as one of the most difficult competitive examination as every year lacs of students write JEE Main and only 2.2 lac aspirants shall be eligible to write JEE-Advanced which is only a fraction of the total students taking the exam. Out of these, 10,000 to 12,000 finally get selected that is less than 1% of the total numbers. About 0.8% of the total students appearing for the JEE are able to get through to the IITs (entry ratio is much less than that of Stanford University!)

The general notion is that the JEE Advanced is a difficult examination and the questions are complex and tough. This is not true. It is merely a different exam. It examines your understanding of concepts, logical aspects and your ability to apply fundamentals to multi-conceptual problems. It also tests your ability to work efficiently without under extreme time pressure. To have optimum success & avoid failing one has to develop excellent examination temperament besides knowledge of the subject and problem solving skills. The 7 basic mantras for success in IIT JEE are:
1st Mantra: Motivation–The foundation of your commitment to JEE Advanced Success
Motivation is an inner state of need or desire that activates an individual to do something that will satisfy that need or desire. Because motivations drive from desires internal to the individual, others can not “motivate” an individual.
Similarly, nobody can force you to study for IIT JEE. For working so hard for IIT JEE you need a lot of internal motivation. Like Arjun, you must only see JEE (the eye of the fish) and nothing else. Most (almost all) of the top rankers study for the whole two years single heartedly for JEE. For these 2 years they leave all their comforts for JEE.
2nd Mantra: Study hard and Study smart
IIT-JEE is a battle, and no battle is ever won without a systematic plan. Though from 2017, board marks will not be needed for rank determination, you should still ensure good marks in board as well as in JEE-Main. You should prepare hard for JEE-Main first as it is not only the gateway to IITs but also to NITs in case if you couldn’t able to perform well in JEE-Advanced. Hence you must plan your preparation very carefully to ensure success in JEE.
Hard work is indispensable for JEE. If you are intelligent that’s good but intelligence alone is NOT going to get you in IIT. You have to work hard to organize your studies in a scientific manner to perform the best. It isn’t that any hard working student can make it to IIT. You need a certain degree of caliber but need not be a genius.
3rd Mantra: Seek the Right Guidance
Hard work is bow, intelligence is arrow and guidance gives you the direction of target. Then only your arrow will hit the target-IIT JEE. This is one of the most important aspect which often decides your rank and hence your career. Hence you should be very careful while selecting your guide-the coaching institute.
These days, IIT- JEE coaching has become far too commercialized. Hundreds of coaching institutes have come into existence. It is the student who falls prey to all these gimmicks and often ends up with either a low rank or failure at IIT JEE. So before joining any coaching institute, first you should analyze your need and then select the institute which fits you the best. Stable and qualified Faculty, Study material, Testing pattern, frequency and management are few key parameters which you must check before joining a coaching institution.
4th Mantra: Select the best Study Material
Students with high IQ level can extract the information from the plethora of books and study material available. Other students get confused due to flood of information and books.
A Good Study Material can do wonders for you. To get optimize output of your efforts; you must select the right study material which can streamline your understanding and maximize the output.
5th Mantra: Manage Your Most Valuable asset -Time
Tick, tick, tick….time just keeps moving on. Students often report that their inability to manage time is the biggest problem they face during JEE preparation. Time management is a skill few people master, but it is one that most people need.
There are some basic principles of Time Management that you can apply. They are (a) Identify best time for studying, (b) Study difficult topic first (c) Use distributed learning and practice (d) make sure that surroundings are conducive to studying (e) make room for relaxation (f) make sure that you have time to sleep and eat properly (g) avoid wastage of time in unproductive work etc.
6th Mantra: Temperament & Positive Attitude
Temperament plays a vital role for success at IIT-JEE. Nervousness can decrease performance to such an effect that a student getting expected to get a top rank in JEE, fails to even qualify. Regular test series at your coaching institution in examination atmosphere helps you to improve your temperament.
Positive attitude is another key aspect for success in IIT JEE. When the attitude is positive we entertain pleasant feelings and constructive images, and see in our mind's eye, what we really want to happen. This brings brightness to the eyes, more energy and happiness. Your whole being broadcasts good will, happiness and success.
7th Mantra: An effective test taking strategy
Examinations are a fact of life for a student. By using right test taking strategies you can significantly increase the scoring and ensure selection in IIT JEE. During the entire academic session give due emphasis on different aspect of your test taking habits, monitor your score, minimize the silly mistakes and improve your answer writing skills in case of subjective questions.
Remember, well begun is half done. If you are able to mould your IIT JEE preparation according to the advice given in this article, you would have made an effective beginning to realizing your dream of being an IITian.

You will not be eligible for admission as preparatory ranks are not considered under round 1. Since you have already qualified to appear for JEE (Advanced), all you need to do is meet the second criterion and apply for round 2, which will be only conducted if seats from round 1 remain vacant.

Yes, you can still get admission in Round 2 if you meet eligibility criteria to appear in JEE (Advanced) and have a valid JEE (Mains) rank. Also, you must have scored 60% or above in class 12th. For SC/ST/PwD category students, 55% or above is required.

No, candidates need not pay any fees to participate in JEE Adv counselling. However, once the seat is allotted, candidates will need to pay approximately INR 35,000 (less for reserved category) as a seat acceptance fee and around INR 20,000 as partial admission fees. Both these payments are adjusted

Mock test released by organising IITs are very useful in understanding the pattern and difficulty level of exam. However, solving official mock test paper only is not advised. It is recommended to solve additional mock test to score good marks in JEE Advanced.
