IIT Kanpur Admission 2026: Cutoff, Fees, Eligibility & Selection

As per the details collated from various sources on the internet, a student must have a GATE rank up to 200 or below for admission to M.Tech at IIT Kanpur.  While there is no minimum GATE score for IIT admission, the minimum rank/ score requirement depends completely on the individual institutes participating in the admission process. At IIT Kanpur, students are offered various courses at the UG and PG levels. Admissions to these courses are entrance-based. Students are offered the following courses at the institute:

NTA announced JEE Main 2024 dates. NTA coducted the JEE Main 2024 exam in two sessions. IIT Kanpur is ranked 4 for Engineering by NIRF 2022. Considered under the top 5 eminent institutes in the country for Engineering education, the cutoffs are comparatively higher. In JoSAA Round 6 of 2022, BTech CSE was the top course with the highest cutoff score of 237. For other courses, such as Aerospace Engineering, the cutoff score stood at 4683 in the R-6. Hence, it is true that it is difficult to get into IIT Kanpur. However, with the right preparation and study strategy, it is never impossible to achieve the goal. 

 The application process for all the courses offered at IIT Kanpur is different. For BTech and BSc/ BS, aspirants must fill out the application form for JEE (Main) through the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) (nta.ac.in). 1. Login with JEE Main 2023 application number and password.
2. Furnish the details in the registration form. JEE Main details in the form will be prefilled from its database.
3. Fill out the complete application form, upload the required documents and pay the application fee. 
4. Download and print the registration receipt.

IIT Kanpur BSc admission is entrance-based via JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced. The process of applying for JEE Mains consists of three steps, i.e. registration, form filling and document upload followed by the application fees payment. Given below is the IIT Kanpur BSc admission process:

STEP 1: IIT Kanpur BSc Application Process 2024

Candidates seeking admission to BSc at IIT Kanpur must submit the online application form for BSc course and JEE exam. Candidates must fill out the JEE Main application form via the official website of the NTA. After qualifying JEE Main, candidates are required to apply for JEE Advanced.

STEP 2: IIT Kanpur BSc Selection Criteria 2024 and Release of Merit List

After completion of registration process, candidates need to go through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced followed by the counselling process for final seat allocation.

STEP 3: IIT Kanpur BSc Admission Confirmation

After completion of the selection rounds, shortlisted candidates can submit the IIT Kanpur BSc fee to confirm their admission.

Admission to the BTech programme is completely entrance exam-based, i.e., based on JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced scores. Candidates seeking admission to BTech can not get admission to IIT Kanpur with only the scores of JEE Main. JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling is the only selection criteria followed by the institute. However, to be eligible for the BTech programme, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with at least 75% aggregate with Science subjects (i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). 

The total fee for the four-year BS programme of IIT Kanpur is INR 8 lakh. This is inclusive of the one-time admission and caution deposits but is not inclusive of the hostel fee. IIT Kanpur BSc seat reservation is prescribed by the Board of Governors subject to the policy formulated from time to time by the Government of India. The seats are reserved for the SC, ST, OBC (Not belonging to Creamy Layer) and PwD (Person with Disability) category candidates.

IIT Kanpur conducts the application process online. The step-wise application process is mentioned below:

1. Open the official website and register.
2. Fill in the required info and complete the registration.
3. Fill the detailed application form by providing information around educational qualifications, parents' details, address of communication and permanent address, and exam center preference.
4. Upload scanned images of passport-size photographs and signature.
5. Pay the application fee.
6. The application will be automatically submitted after the successful application amount payment.

IIT Kanpur MBA total tuition fee ranges between INR 2.8 Lacs and INR 13.1 Lacs as per an unofficial source. The fee excludes admission fee, security deposits, semester fee and hostel charges. There is relaxation in fee for reserved category students. Candidates need to pay fee after completion of the selection rounds, to confirm their seat.
