IIT Roorkee MTech Highlights 2024
The institute offers 41 MTech specialisations along for Engineering graduates. All these MTech specialisations are offered for a duration of two years and is divided into a semester pattern. IIT Roorkee admission 2021 to MTech programme is based on a valid GATE score obtained by eligible candidates. The seat allotment process is then carried out through COAP Counselling. On the basis of GATE score, the merit list is prepared by the board and then offered seats on the basis of availability of seats at the institute. On acceptance of the seats through COAP portal, the candidates can reserve their seats by paying an admission fee to the institute.
However, candidates who possess a regular BTech degree from IITs with a CGPA of greater than 8.0 on a 10-point scale are offered direct admissions, while sponsored category candidates can apply for MTech programme in both full-time and part-time modes, provided they possess relevant work experience. Sponsored category candidates are offered admission based on candidate’s performance in written test and PI rounds.
IIT Roorkee offers admission to a few of the Integrated programmes based on a candidate’s performance in JEE Advanced score. Eligible aspirants need to qualify for course and college-specific cut off rank released by JoSAA through seven rounds of counselling. These programmes are offered for a duration of five years, comprising 10 semesters. The eligibility criteria required to qualify for admission to any of these courses offered at IIT Roorkee is given below:

Students may get admission in IIT Roorkee with 80% in Class 12 as the minimum aggregate ranges between 50% to 75% in Class 12 boards. However, admissions to the programmes at IIT Roorkee are done on entrance basis. Hence, Class 12 marks are not enough. Students also need to have valid entrance test scores.
Presently, IIT Roorkee offers more than 65 UG, PG and doctoral degree courses. It awards the degree of BTech, MTech, MSc, BArch, MBA, MSc, PhD along with a couple of integrated and dual degree courses in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management and Social Sciences. IIT Roorkee has recently introduced two new postgraduate programmes (PGP), namely- Masters in Design (Industrial Design) and Masters in Innovation Management (MIM).
To get into IIT Roorkee, students must target a maximum rank of up to 3569 for BTech admission for the OBC AI category. Yes, in order to take admission in IIT Roorkee BSc courses, candidates must first qualify JEE Main. Students who qualify JEE Main are then required to register and appear for JEE Advanced. This exam is conducted by one of the IITs every year by rotation under the supervision of a Joint Admission Board, which comprises of representatives from all the IITs. IIT Roorkee makes the selection based on candidate’s rank according to the merit in JEE Main+ JEE Advanced.
To get a seat in IIT Roorkee student must qualify for national level entrance exam based on specific course like JEE Advanced for B.Tech which typically need a rank within top 5,000-10,000. GATE for M.Tech, IIT JAM for M.Sc, or CAT for MBA. Admission involves clearing these exams followed by counseling processes like JoSAA or COAP.
IIT Roorkee admission to its flagship courses BArch and BTech is based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced Counselling. For admission, students are required to apply for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced for admission to IIT Roorkee BTech. No, you cannot apply for B.Des programme at IIT Roorkee even if you have cleared the UCEED Entrance Exam because Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in 10+2. But you can apply for B.Des programme at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore.

IIT Roorkee doesn't offer PhD in Design course through CEED. It only offers a MDes in Industrial Design. Admission to the M.Des programme will be based on CEED 2026 merit rank. The candidate will have to apply directly to the participating college once results are declared.
