CEED 2018 was conducted across 20 test cities today, January 20, 2018. The exam was conducted by IIT Bombay from 10 am to 1 pm. This year 11 colleges are accepting CEED scores for admission.

This section evaluates candidates on the basis of their visualisation and spatial ability, analytical and logical reasoning, environmental and social awareness, language and creativity, observation as well as design sensitivity. Shiksha got talking to some CEED aspirants to find out the test pattern and difficulty level of CEED 2018.Most of the students who took CEED 2018 shared that the test paper was easy but it was very lengthy especially Part B of the exam.
CEED 2018: How was the exam?
Chitesh who was earlier working with Goldman Sachs and would like to pursue a programme in Interaction Design said, “The exam was good enough. Section A was not that tricky it was good, people could score there. I think Part A, this year, was easier than last year. There were less Mathematical questions in the paper. Most of the questions asked in this section were on Visual Ability and counting”.
“My exam went fine. Infact it was exactly as I expected”, shared Akanksha Rai, an Industrial Design course aspirant. She further said, “I was expecting part B of the test to be lengthy as similar was the case with NID exam where I had to spend a lot of time on the drawing section”. On the other hand, Surbhi who appeared for the CEED 2018 exam for the first time felt that the test was very difficult and she couldn’t even complete her paper on time. “I kept speeding up my answers but my exam went bad. Maybe I didn’t prepare properly for it”.
A UX designer at CGI, Rahul shared that, “My exam went well, I think Part B was a little lengthy. Apart from that everything else was good. I didn’t get too much time to prepare because I was working. So, because of that I did not know the exam pattern completely. I didn’t even know that it was a computer based test”. His first course preference is Interaction Design, apart from this course he is also interested in Universal Design and Product Design.
A Product Design course aspirant, Maithri Shankar is currently pursuing Architecture from VMS College, Bengaluru. Talking about CEED 2018, she was quoted as saying, “My exam was quite good. Drawing part was pretty challenging and there wasn’t enough time to solve the paper. I was able to complete the paper on time but I feel that quality of my drawings was reduced due to lack of time”.
Difficulty Level of CEED 2018 Part A & Part B
Talking about the difficulty level of CEED exam, Chitesh shared: “Part B was good but it was lengthy. The 50 marks question was easy for Interaction Design”. Elaborating further he said, “In Part B the difficulty level was not that high it was decent, it was CEED level only, but it was lengthy. The test pattern for CEED exam was similar to previous years’ papers unlike NID Entrance Exam which I felt was different”. He further shared the questions asked in the paper, which are listed below:
- The 50 marks question asked was on Asha, which is an organisation that helps pregnant women in rural areas to monitor their health. The question asked was that aspirants had to expertise this process and introduce a new user flow in this process.
- Another question included one tyre, one water bottle, one tub and a cricket bat and using these four things students had to design 5 different products.
Extremely happy with his paper, Vikram Jaiswal said, “My paper went well. I agree with most of the aspirants that Part B was lengthy but then we are aspiring to be designers and drawing part should be our strength”. He further shared that, “I completed Part A in very less time and so maybe I had an advantage there itself”.
As per Rahul, the difficulty level of CEED was similar to past years’ paper. “I have seen past years’ question papers for CEED but the thing is that there aren’t many prep resources for CEED online. So, what I could get my hands on were few last years’ questions and when you go through a PDF of such questions then CEED seems like a paper based test and that’s why I was expecting it to be so. And the drawing part is anyways paper-based so I had an idea about how many questions would be there, what would be the marking etc”. He also said, “The questions in Part A were not that difficult. Even Part B questions were not difficult but they were lengthy. The questions were not out-of-box, similar questions we read in mock tests for which we appeared but somehow the questions felt lengthier”.
Confirming the same, Maitri was quoted as saying, “Part A of the exam was fine. It wasn’t very difficult to answer and one hour was enough to answer all the questions. In Part B, there were four questions from which we could choose, I chose the Industrial Design question because I want to pursue Product Design”. She shared that questions asked in CEED 2018 included: “Design a Product, Design a Poster and Do a Storyboard for Animation and Design a Vehicle”.
Some of the questions asked in the exam as per Akanksha were to “Design a Product and the other three were that we were given an object and we had to use them in different scenarios using all the objects. Other questions were on perspective drawing and graphic design drawing”.
Experience of giving Computer Based Test
“Giving computer based test was a good experience. Both the sections were good and I completed my paper on time”, said Chitesh. Even Maitri felt that her experience of giving a computer based test was quite good. “I had practiced for the same by giving online exams and I sort of have a hang of it but CEED exam had a little confusing system. In one part of the exam there was an option stating ‘Save your response’ and a separate option stating ‘Mark your Response’ and only when you select the mark your response option then only your answer would be considered for evaluation. And this aspect of the paper wasn’t informed to us earlier” she said.
Rahul shared that, “Since I was working and didn’t get too much time to prepare for CEED I was not aware that it was a computer based test. The experience of giving a computer based test was okay but the exam centre that I gave the paper was not that great. The lighting in the exam hall wasn’t great especially for drawing and that created a bit of a hassle. But apart from that everything went smoothly”.
