What is GATE?

GATE is the short form of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national-level examination that is jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

Q:   Is it necessary for a candidate to attempt all questions in GATE?
A:

No, it is not mandatory to attempt all questions in GATE. Attempt only those which you are sure of, as the exam follows negative marking. However, you can still put some guesswork for NATs and MSQs, as there is no negative marking for this.

Negative marking is only applicable on MCQ questions. where 1/3rd mark will be deducted for 1 mark question and 2/3rd mark will be deducted for 2-mark question.

Q:   Are questions based on Engineering Mathematics asked in every GATE paper?
A:
No, questions based on Engineering Mathematics are not asked in every GATE paper. Question papers with codes AR, CY, EY, GG, M.A. PH, and XL do not consist of Engineering Mathematics questions. Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude are the compulsory sections, which include 15% weightage each in total marks in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI TF, and XE. Have a look at the highlights of the GATE Exam Pattern 2024. The GATE Exam 2024 will be conducted in a Computer Based Test Mode. The duration of the GATE 2024 exam will be three hours. The GATE 2024 exam will consist of 65 questions. The total marks for the GATE exam are 100. Questions asked in the GATE exam will be related to the GATE exam syllabus. As per the GATE 2-24 exam pattern, two types of questions, namely Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Answer Type Questions will be asked. In MCQs, candidates need to select one answer from the four options given. In NAT questions, candidates have to enter the correct answer via the virtual keyboard. For the rough work, candidates will be provided with a scribble pad. Read More: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-pattern.

The barcode present in the GATE admit card 2026 carries the candidate's information. It is required for a faster verification process and fraud prevention. So, make sure it does not get tampered. Carry multiple copies in case your GATE 2026 hall ticket is torn or tampered.
