NTA has clearly mentioned that "the use of calculators in any form is not permitted in the JEE (Main) examination."  Therefore, candidates cannot carry any sort of physical calculator into the exam hall, and no on-screen virtual calculator will be available for use. Candidates should prepare to solve numerical questions using manual calculations.

Candidates appearing for JEE Main 2027 may have questions about whether they can use a virtual calculator during the computer-based examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has clarified its calculator policy, and candidates must understand the rules before appearing for the exam.

Is Virtual/On-ScreenCalculator Allowed in JEE Main 2027?

No. Candidates should not expect to use a virtual or on-screen calculator in JEE Main 2027. The examination is conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode. However, this does not mean that candidates will be provided with an on-screen or virtual calculator on the computer.

NTA has clarified that calculators are not allowed in JEE Main. The restriction applies to both physical calculators and virtual calculators.

Candidates must solve numerical questions in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics without using a calculator. The calculator policy is important because JEE Main tests candidates on conceptual understanding, problem-solving ability and calculation speed.

Why Are Calculators Not Allowed in JEE Mains 2027 Exam?

Calculators will not be allowed in JEE Mains 2027 because the exam aims to evaluate students' time management and problem-solving skills. Candidates will be assessed on their mental abilities without relying on external devices for calculations. By prohibiting the use of virtual calculators, the exam ensures a fair assessment of all candidates' understanding and problem-solving capabilities, rather than just their ability to perform quick calculations.

NTA Clarification on Virtual Calculator in JEE Main

The calculator policy became a subject of confusion during last year. Last year, JEE Main Information Bulletin initially mentioned that a standard on-screen calculator would be available during the computer-based test. This led candidates to believe that they could use a virtual calculator during the examination.

However, NTA later issued a clarification.

  • The agency stated that the calculator feature mentioned in the information bulletin was part of the generic examination platform. It did not apply to JEE Main.
  • NTA also clarified that the use of calculators in any form was not permitted in the examination. The agency subsequently uploaded a revised information bulletin.
  • The clarification confirmed that candidates could not use a physical or virtual calculator in JEE Main exam.

How to Prepare for JEE Main Without a Calculator?

JEE Main includes numerical questions that require quick and accurate calculations. Candidates should develop calculation skills during their preparation.

The following methods can help candidates improve their calculation speed.

Practise Mental Calculations

Candidates should practise basic mathematical operations regularly. They should memorise multiplication tables, squares, cubes and common fractions.

For example, candidates should be comfortable calculating:

  • Squares of numbers up to 30
  • Common fraction-to-decimal conversions
  • Basic percentage calculations
  • Simple multiplication and division
  • Common trigonometric values

These calculations can save valuable time during the examination.

Learn Calculation Shortcuts

Candidates can use mathematical shortcuts to solve numerical questions more efficiently. For example, algebraic identities can simplify lengthy calculations.

Similarly, approximation techniques can help candidates eliminate incorrect options in multiple-choice questions.

Practise Physics Numericals

Physics questions often involve calculations related to motion, electricity, magnetism and other topics. They should also learn to identify suitable formulas and simplify calculations before substituting values.

Improve Calculation Speed and Accuracy

Calculation speed is important, but accuracy is equally important. Check signs, units and decimal places while solving numerical questions.

No, JEE Main is not compulsory to get admission in Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology.  Admission in BTech is primarily based on the Sathyabama All India Entrance Examination (SAEEE) conducted by the university itself.

No. Admission to B.E./B.Tech programmes in Tamil Nadu goes through TNEA, which uses your Class 12 marks. There is no separate entrance test for most colleges. Your board marks decide your rank. So focus on your Class 12 scores. Register on the TNEA portal as soon as it opens.

Hello Advik Singh,

For almost every student this is an existential question. On one hand is the requirement to study well for the board exam for 12th and on the other hand there is a need to study for this JEE Mains exam. This my sound as a contradiction but in fact it is not. In practice, when a s
