Which Chemistry Chapters Are Most Important for JEE Main 2027?

Students should focus extra attention on chapters that combine key concepts with regular practice opportunities. The following topics are useful starting points for preparation.

1. Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry typically accounts for 30%-35% of the section. Questions are heavily integrated, meaning mastering reaction mechanisms and intermediates is essential.

  • Aldehydes, Ketones, and Carboxylic Acids: Consistently the highest-weightage chapter in Class 12 Organic Chemistry (often 2-3 questions per shift). Focus heavily on named condensation reactions (Aldol, Cannizzaro, Clemmensen, Wolff-Kishner) and nucleophilic addition mechanisms.

  • General Organic Chemistry (GOC) & Hydrocarbons: Serves as the backbone of all organic reactions. Direct questions cover inductive/mesomeric effects, carbocation/carbanion stability, acidity/basicity comparisons, aromaticity, and electrophilic aromatic substitution.

  • Amines & Diazonium Salts: Tests basicity trends in gas vs aqueous phases, the Carbylamine test, the Hinsberg test, and coupling reactions via diazonium salts.

  • Haloalkanes and Haloarenes: Critical for SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 mechanism comparisons and stereochemical outcomes.

  • Biomolecules: A direct, NCERT-bound chapter yielding 1 guaranteed question (structure of glucose/fructose, peptide linkages, vitamins, and nucleic acids).

2. Inorganic Chemistry

With memory-heavy chapters reduced (such as Metallurgy, Hydrogen, and s-block), the remaining inorganic chapters carry concentrated weight. Nearly all questions are derived strictly from NCERT line-by-line.

  • Coordination Compounds: The single most reliable inorganic chapter, frequently delivering 2-3 questions per shift. Master IUPAC naming, Werner’s theory, valence bond theory (hybridisation and magnetic moments), crystal field splitting (CFSE), and isomerism.

  • Chemical Bonding & Molecular Structure: High-yield fundamental chapter (2 questions per shift). Key concepts include VSEPR geometry, hybridisation, dipole moments, and Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT) bond order/magnetic behaviour.

  • d- and f-Block Elements: Frequently tested alongside Coordination Chemistry (1-2 questions). Focus on lanthanoid contraction, variable oxidation states, catalytic properties, and preparation/properties of K2Cr2O7 and KMnO4.

  • p-Block Elements: Focus on periodic trends, anomalous first-element behaviour, inert pair effect, and structure/basicity of oxoacids.

  • Periodic Table & Periodicity: Fast-solving questions centred on ionisation enthalpy anomalies, electron gain enthalpy trends, and ionic radii comparisons.

3. Physical Chemistry

Physical Chemistry accounts for 35%-40% of the section and dominates the Numerical Value Section (Section B).

  • Chemical Thermodynamics & Energetics: Consistently asked in both MCQs and numericals. Focus on the First and Second Laws, work done in reversible/irreversible paths, enthalpy changes (H), entropy (S), and Gibbs free energy spontaneity (G=H-TS).

  • Chemical Kinetics: Master zero- and first-order integrated rate laws, half-life formulas, Arrhenius equation graphs, and pseudo-first-order reactions.

  • Electrochemistry: Nernst equation calculations, standard electrode potentials (E), Gibbs energy of cells, and Kohlrausch's law/molar conductivity.

  • Solutions: Standard numerical formulas covering Raoult’s law, Colligative properties (elevation in boiling point, depression in freezing point, osmotic pressure), and the vant Hoff factor (i).

  • Equilibrium (Chemical & Ionic): While chemical equilibrium involves straightforward Kp/Kc calculations, ionic equilibrium requires solid practice on pH calculations of buffers, hydrolysis of salts, and solubility product (Ksp) precipitation conditions.

  • Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry (Mole Concept): Essential base for stoichiometry, limiting reagents, and concentration terms (molarity, molality, mole fraction).

Chapters such as Coordination Compounds, Aldehydes, Ketones & Carboxylic Acids, Thermodynamics, and GOC consistently carry the highest number of questions across shifts.

  • Physical: 8 to 9 Questions (heavily featured in Section B numericals)
  • Organic: 8 to 9 Questions
  • Inorganic: 7 to 8 Questions

How to Prepare JEE Mains 2027 Chemistry According to Chapter-Wise Weightage

A chapter-wise preparation plan can help students use their study time effectively. Follow these steps to organise your preparation for JEE Main 2027.

  • Verify the official syllabus: Refer to the most recent JEE Mains 2027 syllabus available on the NTA website. Avoid depending on outdated chapter lists without confirming if the topics are covered in the current syllabus.
  • Assess your strengths and weaknesses: Categorise chapters into topics you are proficient in, topics that require practice, and topics that you have not thoroughly studied.
  • Establish conceptual understanding: Grasp the theory and derivations behind key formulas as needed. This will assist you in tackling unfamiliar questions.
  • Practice past exam questions: Work on questions from various years and shifts after finishing each chapter. This will help you comprehend the question patterns and the level of difficulty.
  • Keep a formula notebook: Document essential formulas, units, conditions, and frequent errors. Regularly review this notebook instead of waiting until the last minute.
  • Engage in mock tests: Take complete JEE Mains 2027 mock exams under conditions that mimic the actual test. Evaluate your wrong answers and pinpoint the chapters that require further revision.
  • Revise consistently: Revisit completed chapters at regular intervals. Ongoing revision can help you memorise formulas and prevent you from repeating the same errors.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the difficulty level of JEE Main?
A:

JEE Main difficulty level is similar to class 12 board exams. Syllabus of JEE Main is similar to class 11 and 12 syllabus. The questions asked in exam are tricky and need an in-depth understanding of subjects. They need to have conceptual understanding of every topic to score well in exam. Those who study NCERT can get a decent score in JEE Mains.

Q:   How to crack JEE Mains in first attempt?
A:

Clearing the JEE Main exam in first attempt is not a difficult task. Several students clear JEE Main while in class 12. One thing that makes it easy to clear JEE Main with class 12 is that students are in regular touch of most JEE syllabus. To score good marks in JEE Main in the first attempt, it is advised that you study class 11 and 12 topics thoroughly, clear all the concepts and solve mock test papers. Also, NCERT books which you study in class 11 and 12 are the best books for JEE Main preparation. Students must study NCERT properly and solve all the questions in the book and do not memorize the concepts as some students do rather understand the concepts.

Q:   How do I balance school studies with JEE Main preparation?
A:

Students who are in class 12 and would also be appearing in JEE Mains exam mostly find it difficult to manage both their class/school and JEE studies. However, all these students have an advantage over others/droppers aspirants as there are many common topics in class 12 and JEE.

To benefit, they must identify all the topics that are common and study those first. Secondly, cover the topics that have more weightage in class 12 and complete them. Before a few days of JEE Mains, study specifically for JEE. This way, they can manage both class 12 and JEE efficiently.

Can Students Skip Low-Weightage JEE Mains 2027 Chemistry Chapters?

Candidates should not leave out chapters solely based on their lower weightage in past exam analyses. A chapter that had fewer questions in earlier assessments may still be included in a future exam. The distribution of questions can also change from year to year.

While the high-weightage chapters should be prioritised, candidates must ensure they grasp the fundamentals of each chapter before progressing to advanced questions. This strategy can help to tackle a broader range of questions during the examination.

Q&A Icon
