GITAM stands for Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, which was founded by Dr MVVS Murthi in 1980. The first campus of GITAM University was established in Visakhapatnam, which is now the main campus, spread over 110 acres. There are other campuses located in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. These three campuses constitute 19 institutes. In 2007, the University was granted the status of a Deemed University. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked GITAM University 37 under the Law category in 2024.
GITAM conducts GITAM Admission Test (GAT) for admission to Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Science, Health Science, Law and Nursing courses. GITAM University offers a total of 109 programmes in Technology, Architecture, Pharmacy, Science, Management, International Business and Law at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level.

GITAM University Hyderabad campus is an off-campus of GITAM established in 2009 in Hyderabad, Telangana. The campus has six schools and skill development centres such as CISCO, IBM, Virtusa, Innovation Centre, Hitachi Solutions, Computer-Aided Engineering, etc. Only such candidates get admission who qualify GITAM Hyderabad University cutoff. GITAM University Bengaluru campus was established in 2012 in Bengaluru. It is located near the IT hub of the city and has two academic blocks, one spacious library building, an administrative block and two hostels. The last date to apply for the GAT registrations in the year 2025 was 5th June 2025. The candidates were allowed to submit applications for BBA admissions since December 2024. Candidates who registered themselves for the exam within this period will be able to appear for the GITAM GAT entrance exam
