IIT, Kharagpur

Since childhood I had a dream of making a quad copter and make it fly high in the air. Also I was very much interested in repairing toys like electric robot, car, etc. I eventually developed interest towards Mechanical Engineering and decided to pursue BTech in Mechanical Engineering. As I wanted to pursue Mechanical Engineering in BTech, I had to take the science stream in my class 11-12. My passion towards machines and their working made me passionate towards Mechanical Engineering. And as far as the best engineering institutes in the country are concerned, the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are the best. So I aimed to secure a seat in one of the IITs. Also my parents understood my passion towards and they encouraged me. I am grateful to them for their support.

My Admission journey

My Parents selected a very good institute for me for my class 11 and 12. I had joined in IIT Ramaiah’s Institute located at Shankermutt, Nallakunta, Hyderabad. I think Ramaiah’s Institute is the best place for learning concepts and applying them. The faculty is highly experienced and knowledgeable. They guided me very well through the years.

For BTech admission, I had written only two entrance tests - JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. I did not take any other entrance test because I was pretty confident about my seat in IIT (at least a seat in NIT).

The best way to crack any entrance exam is first of all, be thorough with the concepts and then practice a lot. Rigorous practice is very necessary to crack JEE Mains and Advanced. You need to start thinking differently and out of the box to make a mark for yourself. Just mugging formulas would do no good.

Before taking admission in a particular college, consult any friend of yours who is studying or studied at that particular institution. I had done the same. That will give you a better and a clearer picture of the institute you want to join.

Few Tips to crack JEE Mains & Advanced:

  • Wake up early in the morning (at 5.00 am). It is the best for studying as the mind is fresh.
  • Be thorough with your course text books (either CBSE or State syllabus books). It will help you score 50%-60% in JEE Mains.
  • Never miss classes, and make sure you read the topics taught that day itself. There would be no burden at the last
  • Be thorough with the basic concepts, never ignore them if you do not get them. Ask your teachers and clear your doubts. Never hesitate to ask them.
  • Learning is not enough; you need to rigorously practice problems so that you become thorough with your concepts.
  • You need to revise your concepts frequently or else you will forget them and it would become a big burden at the end.
  • Lastly, you need a little bit of exercise. Sitting for long hours would make you obese and that could lead to severe health problems
  • Eating nutritious food and keeping oneself healthy in those the 2 years is a must as this time period will decide your career

My Engineering Life

I had joined in Mechanical Engineering dual degree course in IIT Kharagpur. It is the largest institute in the country in terms of area (2100 acres). It has a vast campus. Lots of greenery. I got exposed to various kinds of people there. It was a mix there. Almost students from all the states were present there. That was the first time when I had met different kind of people and I felt happy. My institute has a diverse culture. All festivals are celebrated and students from all religions and regions live in peace and harmony. I feel very lucky to be a part of this premier institute. And I think I have chosen the right path for myself. The exposure we get here is incomparable. It’s really awesome.

In the first year of my engineering college life, I was far away from my home. My parents took care of me till my school, but here in my engineering college I had to learn to take care of myself. I am a free bird here. But this can also be dangerous. Few students misuse this freedom to do everything but study. Even though they get very good ranks in the entrance exams, they fail in semester exams. This is due to lack of monitoring. But with determination and control over oneself, one can surely succeed in life.

I have made a few mistakes too. But I have learnt that one should not misuse his/her freedom. I too did not pay attention to my studies. But once my scores fell I realized that I was going on the wrong track. Then I shared my feelings with my mother. She consoled me and guided me. Since then I am paying full attention to my studies and have scored well in my semester exams. One should know when to study and when to enjoy.

I am still in my second year so I have no experience in placements/Job opportunities.

College teaches you a lot of things; both good and bad. But never feel dejected or depressed when you fail to score in one or two tests. Remember failure is the first step to success. Also, have good contact with your lecturers, and take the best out of them.
