Q. Is this your first attempt?

A.

Yes, it was my first attempt in CAT.

Q. What is the minimum time-frame needed to prepare well for CAT?

A.

It depends on person to person. If you have a background in Mathematics so I think it is not required to revise the theory once again. If you don’t, you may need to do that. So, if you have a very strong foundation in Mathematics time frame of 4-5 months (for preparation) is enough.

Q. How long did you prepare for it?

A.

CAT was not on my priority list. So, I think I gave it about three months of preparation.

Q. Did you have any particular study plan to crack the exam?

A.

No my study plan was to practice as many tests as possible. Because as I said I am from mathematical background, I knew the theory for paper, I just wanted to get my speed and accuracy up. So, I practiced tests.

Q. Did you join any coaching institute?

A.

Yes, I joined the test series of TIME. I did not join a regular course because I was having my BTech semester as well. So, I couldn’t give much time to classes. So, just a test series.

Q. Is it necessary to join coaching to prepare for CAT?

A.

It may not be. As I said, it depends on whether you have a good foundation in Maths, Logical reasoning and English. If so, you may not require coaching, that is, if you think that you could do well with little bit of brushing up.

Correspondence courses or classroom series at coaching institutes can be helpful to candidates. But joining a coaching institute for practice tests is a must, I say.

Q. What were your weak areas and what did you do to improve them?

A.

Weak areas as I said, Maths was not one of them but English was. To improve that I worked on my vocabulary skills a little bit. As in, I had some material from GRE. My sister had given GRE before. So I had some material left over for that and I used it to brush up my vocabulary skills.

Q. Tell us a little about your family.

A.

My parents work in HPCL. Both of them are in Mumbai itself. My sister is pursuing her MS from University of Sourthern California in the US in Chemical Engineering.

Q. Do you pursue any hobby?

A.

Yes, infact I like football, gaming and I like to make short films.

Q. So, have you made any short films?

A.

Yes, MOOD-I is going on. And last year I was the editor and involved in the script of the film which won in MOOD-I in short films category. The name of my film was Bombay Dreams.

Q. What were you sectional scores in CAT?

A.

Sectional percentiles- Quant was 99.94 and verbal was 100.

Q. Have you received any calls so far?

A.

Not as of now.

Q. Which institute are you aiming for?

A.

That would be IIM-A.

Q. Do you have any placement offers in hand?

A.

Yes I do, from HUL (Hindustan Uniliver).

Q. Are you planning to take it up?

A.

As of now I am still considering whether job experience would help me more or MBA degree straight off. I have not decided yet. I will decide after the interviews and everything is done.

Q. Just in case if you don’t get through to IIM-A, what is your back up plan?

A.

The job, I think.

Q. So you will not consider joining any other IIM?

A.

May be not. Mostly not.

Q. Do you have any tips for CAT aspirants?

A.

Don’t get disheartened if you give a mock CAT and you don’t score well. Learn from your mistakes. I feel if you don’t do mistakes you may learn less and if you make mistakes then you know where you are wrong and thereafter work on improving your weak areas. So, I think making mistakes helps more rather than not making mistakes in the preparation.
