Commonly asked questions
Q:   What type of questions are asked in JEE Main?
A:

There are two question types in JEE Main exam. Multiple choice questions and numerical ability questions. In MCQ, every question has 4 options with only 1 correct answer. Select the correct option. In numerical ability question type, no options are there. Solve them and write answer using keyword and mouse.

Q:   How many questions are asked in JEE Main exam?
A:

Paper 1 has 75 questions where Physics Chemistry and Mathematics, each section has 25 questions. Out of 25 questions, 20 are MCQs and five are numerical value questions. You must answer all 5 numerical value-type questions. All 20 multiple-choice questions are compulsory. Complete all 75 questions in 3 hours.

Q:   What is Chapterwise weightage of class 11 and 12 topics in JEE Main?
A:

Chapterwise weightage of class 11 and 12 topics in JEE Main are mentioned below:

  • Physics: Current Electricity Waves AC, Magnetism, Laws of Motion Work, Power and Energy.
  • Chemistry the high weightage topics are s and p block elements, Coordination compounds, Thermodynamics Gaseous state, Chemical bonding, Atomic structure, Polymers, Environmental Chemistry Organic Chemistry.
  • Mathematics, the high weightage topics are Sequence and Series Vectors and 3D, Integral and Differential Calculus, Definite and Indefinite Integral.
Q:   Do I need to attempt all the questions in JEE Main exam?
A:

NO, it is compulsory to attempt all questions in the JEE Main exam. The JEE Main exam has negative marking and candidates must answer only those questions for which they know the correct answer. Students must note that there are no minimum marks in JEE Main that students need to score. Students gets All India Rank based on the marks they secure in exam and gets admission based on that rank.

Overall Difficulty Level of JEE Main 2024 Paper

Across both Session 1 (January/February) and Session 2 (April), the overall difficulty level of the JEE Main 2024 examination was rated as Moderate. While individual shifts varied slightly, the overall subject-wise hierarchy remained consistent: Mathematics > Chemistry ≥ Physics.

Parameter

Session 1 (January)

Session 2 (April)

Overall Difficulty

Moderate (with noticeable shift-wise score-percentile variations)

Moderate to Slightly Tougher

Physics / Chemistry

Easy, highly scoring

Easy to Moderate

Mathematics

Moderately tough and calculation-heavy

Tricky, balanced, and lengthier

Mathematics (Moderate to Tough & Lengthy):

  • Consistently the most challenging and time-consuming section across all shifts.

  • Heavy emphasis was placed on Calculus, Vectors & 3D Geometry, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices, and Binomial Theorem.

  • Many questions, especially numerical value questions, required extensive multi-step calculations, making time management critical.

Physics (Easy to Moderate):

  • Generally straightforward, balanced, and largely formula-driven.

  • High-weightage areas included Modern Physics, Current Electricity, Electrostatics, Thermodynamics, and Mechanics.

  • Direct application of NCERT concepts and standard formulas was sufficient to score well in most shifts.

Chemistry (Easy to Moderate):

  • Predominantly aligned with line-by-line NCERT theory and reactions.

  • Inorganic and Organic Chemistry dominated the multiple-choice section with theoretical and memory-based questions.

  • Physical Chemistry was largely concentrated in the numerical section and remained manageable.

A:

Candidates should take JEE Main mock tests at least once a week. However, in the last month before exam, frequency should be increased to 3 to 4 mock exam per week.

Q:   Can I change the language of the question paper during the exam?
A:

JEE Main question paper is in English, Hindi and language selected when you filled application form. In total, JEE Main is in 13 languages and you can select any language out of available options. You cannot switch language of question paper during exam.

JEE Main 2024 Question Types & Paper Pattern

Each paper was divided into two sections following NTA's standardised CBT structure:

1. Section A (Multiple Choice Questions - MCQs)

  • Count: 20 compulsory questions per subject (Total 60 questions).

  • Format: Single choice correct out of 4 options.

  • Marking: +4 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect answer, 0 for unattempted.

2. Section B (Numerical Value Type - NVTs)

  • Count: 5 compulsory questions per subject.

  • Format: Answer is a non-negative or signed integer/decimal value rounded to the nearest integer.

  • Marking: +4 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect answer, 0 for unattempted.

How to Effectively Solve JEE Main Question Papers

  • Follow the 3-Round Strategy: Solve direct, formula-based questions first, tackle moderate calculations in round two, and leave lengthy or tricky problems for the final pass.
  • Order Subjects Strategically: Finish Chemistry in 35 to 40 minutes to bank quick marks, move to Physics for 50 minutes, and reserve 70 to 75 minutes for heavy calculations in Mathematics.
  • Take Care of  Negative Marking: Never guess blindly on MCQs; only attempt ambiguous questions if you can eliminate at least two options.
  • Maintain an Error Log: Spend equal time post-test categorising lost marks into conceptual gaps, misread questions, and calculation blunders to avoid repeating them.
