MBA Placement Gap Explained

MBA Placement Gap: Why Some Get Offers while Some Remain Unplaced?

Two graduates from the same batch at the same university complete their MBA program. One receives multiple offers, while another struggles to secure even one. Why does this happen?

It is not because one graduate has better grades or higher IQ than another. Placements in an MBA are determined by practical experience, interview preparation, the demand for the profession, and above all, the opportunities that colleges provide for their students. For aspirants planning their journey, clearing entrance tests like the CAT exam is only the first step, and candidates often keep track of updates using resources like the CAT admit card long before campus realities come in the picture.

The problem was highlighted in a report published by India Today in May 2026. According to the Unstop Talent Report 2026, only 26% of the MBA graduates mentioned in the report found a job after graduating. Looking closely at current MBA hiring trends 2026 gives us a clear picture of the ground reality.

It makes one wonder why MBA graduates have placement problems when it is believed that pursuing an MBA can improve career prospects. Conducting a proper B-school placement reality check helps students understand what actually determines success.

The Largest Myth Students Have About Placements for MBAs

Students join business schools thinking that being admitted means they are going to be placed automatically. Sadly, that is not how the real job market works. Companies are not going to hire students just because they are pursuing an MBA. They want people who can start contributing to the organisation right away, which explains why MBA students go unplaced despite holding degrees.

How Can Students Enhance Their Placement Possibilities?

There are several measures that students can undertake during their MBA:

  • Developing skills that are relevant to their desired positions.
  • Considering internships and projects to be very important.
  • Learning how to conduct interviews and make presentations.
  • Staying up to date with all business news and industry developments.
  • Attending various case competitions and workshops organized by the industry.

How Can Students Evaluate Placement Records?

Before applying, don't just look at the best salary package offered by the college. Look at these criteria:

  1. Placement percentage: Learn how many students managed to find a job and how this figure was arrived at.
  2. Median and average salary: Determine the median and average salary instead of focusing on the maximum one.
  3. Recruitment firms: Learn about the firms that visit the college.
  4. Practical preparation and internship opportunities: Learn how the program trains its students.
  5. Placement support: Learn about mock interviews and resume help provided.
  6. Total program cost: Compare the program cost to its realistic outcomes.

MBA Campus Placements: How to Crack Personal Interview?

To crack MBA campus interviews, candidates must focus on thorough preparation, as well as strong communication. Candidates must start by mastering their resume. The interview panel may ask questions from any project, internship, and skill with concrete examples of achievements mentioned on the resume. While answrring questions, use actual situations to highlight skills. This helps you structure stories about leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution clearly. Candidates must also research the target companies deeply. Understand their business models, recent news, competitors, and core values. The primary factor to work upon is polishing communication skills. Candidates must maintain good eye contact, listen actively, and speak confidently. Always prepare two or three thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer at the end.

No, according to the estimated data, you would need a CAT cutoff of atleast 94 percentile to be qualified for final admission offer. Note that this percentile is not official and is only an estimate, since the institute does not release the cutoff publicly.

Candidates should first understand basic concepts, including divisibility rules, prime factorisation, HCF and LCM, and remainders. They should then solve topic-wise practice questions and previous years' CAT questions to improve accuracy and problem-solving speed.

There is no fixed number of questions from the Number System in CAT. The number of questions varies across exam slots and years. Candidates should prepare the topic along with other important areas of Quantitative Aptitude.
