IIM admission and selection process for 2023-25 MBA/PGP batch began in August with commencement of CAT 2022 registration process. The IIMs accept CAT application form as the admission application for MBA/PGDM courses. Candidates who wish to pursue MBA from IIMs, are required to fill the CAT 2022 application form and clear the test.

IIM admission criteria includes category wise CAT qualifying cut offs, academic parameters, personality parameters, formula for calculation of final admission score, etc. The IIMs will release their admission and selection criteria for 2023-25 batch between September and January. They will release the shortlist after CAT 2022 result declaration in January 2023. Candidates will be able to check online their shortlist status for every IIM they selected as a preferred institute in the CAT application form. Those who will make it to the list will have to submit the PI form before the deadline.

Admission to IIMs and other B-schools through CAT score is done on the basis of Written Ability Test or Group Discussion and Personal Interview (WAT/GD-PI). Selection criteria and minimum CAT cut off marks play an important role in selection of candidates. Non-IIMs accepting CAT score for admission release their admission schedule and selection process from September onwards.

Selection Procedure of IIMs Through CAT

Admission process through CAT exam score into IIMs and other management institutes begins in January. Immediately after CAT result announcement, the IIMs begin the shortlisting process of candidates for WAT-PI. In this process, candidates have to upload their CAT scores on the official website of their desired IIM. The institutes, then assess each candidate's CAT score against the final cut off and academic profile to create a list of students who can participate in WAT-PI. IIM admission process of all 20 institutes lasts for three to four months and the classes commence from June-July. Admission procedure of non-IIMs also get over around the same time.

IIM admission is based on three parameters including, CAT score, WAT/GD-PI, academic record. The IIM admission procedure includes three stages:

  • First phase: Shortlisting of candidates

  • Second phase: WAT/GD-PI round

  • Third phase: Final selection

IIM Selection Process 2021

IIM Selection Process Through CAT

First phase:

Each test takers is shortlisted on the basis of his/her CAT score viz-a-viz CAT 2022 cut offs fixed by each IIM individually for that year. Minimum cut-offs of the IIMs generally over 90 percentile for General candidates (much lower for reserved category candidates), which means, those who will score above 90 percentile in CAT 2022 will be eligible for the interview round. But whether they are invited for the interview, depends on the actual CAT score and past academic record. On the other hand, cut-offs of newer IIMs range between 80-60 percentile.

Second phase:

In this phase, IIMs conduct WAT/GD-PI. This stage is the decider as the selection panel finalises the candidate on the basis of their performance in this round.
