The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the NEET 2020 exam on September 30. The exam was conducted at 3,843 centres across India amid COVID-19, with proper arrangements made at all NEET exam centres.  The NTA released the NEET question papers after the conduct of the exam. Q:   Is it necessary to pass in individual sections of NEET?
A: 

There will be no sectional qualifying criterion for NEET 2025. NTA releases overall qualifying marks or cutoff marks for each category. The overall marks will be considered while preparing the rank list for NEET. But to ensure a good score, candidates must ensure a high number of attempts with full accuracy. A skewed performance might hamper the overall marks obtained in NEET.

Q:   What is the pattern of the NEET exam?
A: 

The NEET exam is conducted offline in pen and paper mode. The NEET exam pattern is as such-

  • There are 180 MCQs.
  • 45 are from Physics, 45 from Chemistry and 90 from Biology (Botany and Zoology). 
  • Each question is of 4 marks.
  • The total marks are 720.
  • The exam duration is 3 hours.
Q:   What is the section-wise weightage in NEET exam?
A: 

The NEET UG exam comprises Physics, Chemistry and Biology sections. There are a total 180 questions in the exam. The exam carries 720 marks. The section wise-wightage of these three sections is shared below-

NEET Physics- 45 questions (180 marks)

NEET Chemistry- 45 questions (180 marks)

NEET Biology (Botany & Zoology)- 90 questions (360 marks)

Q:   What changes have been introduced by NTA for NEET UG 2026 Re Exam?
A: 

The NTA has introduced the given changes for NEET UG 2026 Re exam-

  • The NTA extends exam duration. The re-exam will be held from 2:00 to 5:15 PM.
  • The NTA has increased the rough work space to 4 pages.
  • The NTA redesigns the question paper booklet by adding two rough pages just after the introduction.

There will be bonus marking or extra marks awarded to NEET candidates only if there is a discrepancy in the NEET answer key. Clarifying the same, NTA has stated:

1. If more than one option is found to be correct then Four marks (+4) will be awarded to only those who have marked any of the correct options.

2. If all options are found to be correct then Four marks (+4) will be awarded to all those who have attempted the question.

3. If none of the options is found correct or a Question is found to be wrong or a Question is dropped then all candidates who have appeared will be given four marks  (+4) irrespective of the fact whether the question has been attempted or not attempted by the candidate.

Q:   Was there any change in the NEET 2023 exam analysis as compared to last year?
A: 
Although the NEET 2023 exam pattern remained the same as last year, there have been various changes as compared to that of last year. The difficulty level of NEET 2023 was easy to moderate. While Physics was the toughest section last year, this year it was termed as an easy section by experts and students. Chemistry on the other hand, was the toughest section this year. Last year, the difficulty level of this section was easy to moderate. The Biology section difficulty level was more or less the same this year as well, which was easy to moderate. Among the two subjects, Botany was comparatively tougher than Zoology. The distribution of questions from Class 11 and Class 12 was also similar to last year.

Shiksha reached out to the students who took the exam at the NEET exam centres to capture their reactions about the exam and the arrangements made by the NTA and the exam centre authorities. The exam difficulty level was easy to moderate this year and most of the candidates were happy with the government's decision of conducting NEET exam as per the scheduled date. Some candidates rated NEET 2020 as moderate to difficult. They also expressed that were expecting the examination to be easy, given the circumstances. However, only a small fraction of students found the examination easy.

According to most students, the NEET Physics section was the toughest. The Physics section was dominated by the questions from Class 12 syllabus and had the most number of numerical questions. The NEET Chemistry section was moderate and had a lot of theory-based questions. The NEET Biology was easy and most number of questions were from Ecology and Human Physiology.

Q:   Will there be negative marking in NEET?
A: 

The NEET exam carries negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. Candidates should mark their answers carefully in the exam to avoid the penalty.

Q:   Will marks be deducted for unanswered questions in NEET?
A: 

No, marks are not deducted for unanswered questions in NEET. However, the NTA applies negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer in the NEET UG examination.

Q:   Was the NEET 2025 exam pattern changed?
A: 

Yes, the NEET 2025 exam pattern was changed. NTA announced the change in the exam pattern on January 25, 2025, to enable candidates prepare accordingly. The optional questions were removed. Instead of 200 questions, there were 180 questions. The total duration of NEET 2025 was reduced from 200 minutes to 180 minutes or three hours now.

Q:   When is the right time to start solving the NEET question papers for preparation?
A: 

Aspirants should start solving the NEET question papers at least six months prior to the exam. Prior to solving the previous years NEET question papers, they should complete the NEET syllabus completely. Students may also solve sectional portions from the NEET question paper after completing the preparation for each subject. Ideally students should solve the NEET question paper in the exam timing, from 2 PM to 5 PM, without any break. This would help them get adjusted to the exam taking environment. Moreover, the test should be taken without any break. It must also be ensured that they take the test in a quite environment either alone or with a group of fellow NEET aspirants. Creating a simulated test-taking experience is important. The above factors must be followed to get the best out of the NEET question paper.

Preparation Tips for NEET UG Exam

Making a proper preparation strategy and following a study schedule religiously will help in clearing the examination. Before starting with the preparation part, students must make a note of a few preparation tips given below:

  • First of all, analyse the complete syllabus and make a note of it before beginning the preparation. Divide your time taking into consideration the number of days left before the examination and the syllabus to be covered
  • Start your preparation with the basics. Clear and strengthen each and every topic from the basic level and focus on the clarity of concepts. Practice all diagrams with proper labelling
  • Students are advised to make short and crisp notes from all the topics for revision. This will help them ensure that nothing is omitted
  • After completing the NEET syllabus once, students must start working on the revision part and focus on the weak areas
  • Practice as many practice papers and start taking NEET mock tests. Devote a minimum of three hours to solving MCQs daily

No. NEET is mandatory for all MBBS admissions in India, government, private, deemed, or minority institution. The Supreme Court of India has made NEET the single entrance exam for all UG medical admissions across the country, and there are no exceptions.
