A team of researchers at IIT Ropar has developed a UVGI based room device to help combat infections like coronavirus.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has announced that a team of researchers at the institute has developed a room disinfection device in collaboration with a private company, Momentum India Private Limited. The indigenous device harnesses the germicidal effects of ultraviolet (UV-C) radiations to inactivate viruses and bacteria, the institute said in a statement.

The state-of-the-art device has been designed and conceptualised by Dr. Khushboo Rakha, Assistant Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Dr. Naresh Rakha, Senior Scientific Officer, with technical support from Dr Shahriar Reza, Design Consultant, IIT Ropar said. The team worked under the support and guidance of Dean, ICSR, Professor Harpreet Singh and Professor Sarit K Das, Director, IIT Ropar.

The design of the UV Safe guarantees zero-shadow 360 degrees disinfection through its prismatic body and foldable wings. The specially designed wings provides focused exposure to the most frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, tabletops, cupboards, room fixtures, wall corners, worktops, artifacts, furniture tops, etc. The trapezoid base houses the control panel of the equipment. A removable handle and magnetic cover have been designed for comfortable storage and transit of the device. This unique and efficient design has been patented, the institute said.

The device boasts of multiple safety features like a remote control to enable its operator to stay at a safe distance, infrared motion sensors to automatically switch off the ultraviolet lamps on movement detection, and emergency stop switch to shut down the device in emergency situations, the institute said in a statement.
