NIT Calicut Joins Forces with Indian Army for Sustainable Infrastructure Using Geothermal Tech
NIT Calicut has collaborated with CWE Jhansi (Indian Army) to advance a sustainable future through the development of a geothermal-based Net Zero Energy Building.
Under the leadership of Director Prof. Prasad Krishna and Prof. A. Shaija, Chairperson of the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (CCECE), NIT Calicut has announced a landmark collaboration with Col. Akhil Singh Charak of the Indian Army and Arijit Ghosh, Managing Director of SAP Automation Pvt. Ltd., to validate India’s first geothermal-based Net Zero Energy Building at CWE Jhansi.
Dr. Vinod Kumar Sharma and Dr. Deepa S. N. from the Centre for Clean Energy and Circular Economy (CCECE), NIT Calicut, visited the Geothermal-Based Net Zero Energy Building at CWE Jhansi, where they engaged in insightful discussions with Col. Akhil Singh Charak and Arijit Ghosh on advancing sustainable defence infrastructure and exploring the potential of geothermal technology for heating and cooling applications in India.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation, the Indian Army has constructed India’s first geothermal-based net-zero energy and off-grid building through MES Jhansi, under the aegis of the Headquarters Chief Engineer, Bhopal Zone.
Powered by a geothermal system and supplemented with rooftop solar panels, the building generates more renewable energy than it consumes annually, achieving an impressive Energy Performance Index (EPI) below 35. This pioneering project significantly reduces CO₂ emissions compared to conventional infrastructure, advancing the Army’s vision of self-sufficiency, energy independence, and carbon-neutral operations.
The collaboration between NIT Calicut and the Indian Army marks a pivotal step in advancing energy-efficient innovations, driving cutting-edge research in green infrastructure, and reducing the carbon footprint of critical facilities. United in this mission, we are shaping sustainable energy solutions for a cleaner, greener future.
