IAS syllabus only mentions the current events of national and international importance in the official notification. But current events of national and international importance is a very broad term and the candidates need to decide which topics to be left for the exam.
Current events of national and international importance include all the events occurring in India and the world. Current Affairs is the major stakeholder of the IAS preparation. IAS preparation can be said the extension of Current Affairs in all its aspects and directions. IAS questions are always influenced by current events of national and international importance. Current Affairs is the only constituent of the IAS syllabus, common to all the General Studies papers and Essays. The current affairs topics are the tip of the iceberg which have their roots in the static topics as mentioned in the IAS syllabus topics. The current affairs preparation is critical to the selection in the IAS exam. As the IAS Toppers suggest, current affairs, the IAS syllabus and the previous year's question papers guide the IAS preparation.
The candidates should always analyse the previous years’ IAS question papers because such analysis will provide direction to the IAS preparation. IAS preparation requires deep insight, opinion building and in-depth analysis of current affairs which can help them in IAS preparation but there is a lot of study material spread across the net. Firstly, the candidates should zero down the number of topics and then start preparing them daily.

The IAS 2023 Prelims exam was held on May 28th, 2023. The exam was moderately to difficult overall, with the General Studies Paper 1 being moderate to difficult and the GS Paper 2 CSAT being very lengthy. The exam also included more questions from the Environment and Geography section, and fewer questions from current affairs and international relations. The exam pattern changed, with altered Assertion and Reason questions, and a new format for multiples.
The cut-off for the exam was expected to be between 82 and 85, compared to 88 in 2022. Only 14,624 students scored above the cut-off and were eligible to proceed to the Mains round.
Some students who took the CSAT paper said it was very difficult, and some even approached the courts against the UPSC. Even some candidates files a petition against the difficulty level of the IAS prelims GS-2 (CSAT) paper.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) asked a few factual questions in the 2023 IAS Prelims exam. The questions were moderate in difficulty and required both conceptual understanding and factual knowledge. The questions covered topics such as presidential elections, money bills, due process of law, and emergency provisions. Some say that the questions were difficult to answer and had limited scope for using the elimination method.
The UPSC Prelims exam syllabus has not changed for many years, so the paper setters tend to repeat questions.
Yes, the Union Public Service Commission dropped the imphal exam city from the IAS exam centres list for the IAS 2024 prelims exam. The candidates who opted for IAS 2024 imphal exam centre can change their exam centre for the IAS prelims exam. They can opt any of the 80 exam centres.
