Beginning 2021 with competitive examinations, the blow of the pandemic disrupted 2020 seems to have not only pushed the examination cycles but also sees softening of the exam levels too. We saw it in UCEED, now we see it in NIFT as well. Read detailed NIFT 2021 exam analysis for BDes admisisons.
The pattern of the NIFT entrance exam 2021 didn’t see any change though, the negative marking @ +1/- 0.25, re-introduced last year, continued to make its presence felt in the NIFT 2021 GAT papers of all streams. The paper format and the number of questions were in accordance with the previously announced NIFT exam pattern with the difficulty levels being moderate, all in all the paper was quite doable for any consistent student. The passages were small and weren't time consuming, the English was doable, Reasoning was a balanced mix of topics like puzzles, cubes and dices, series, Odd ones out, blood relations, directions, coding decoding, ranking & positioning. Quantitative on the other hand saw all major topics covered from number system to ratio & proportion, SI, CI, profit & loss, work time, mixtures & allegations, etc.

The Business Domain segment saw questions from America’s recent elections, Nobel 2020, latest brands & their Ambassadors, handicrafts, a few from general sciences & social sciences, important days.. everything that we have been recommending and mentoring for found its presence in the exam. It will be fit to say that there were no surprises, after all the surprises the year gone by has served us, we all can well do without more of them!
NIFT 2021 analysis of CAT paper for B Des
Like last year, this year too there were three questions to attempt. Of the three, two were from visual communication segment while the third was a creative product representation based.
The first question translated as, “Design a virtual space for Webinar”.
Having spent 2020 almost online, learning and participating in activities, we all are now very familiar with platforms like Zoom, Meet, Gotomeeting, Teams etc. This question wanted us to design the interface of any such ‘hypothetical’ platform. Here, the word ‘hypothetical’ is important as they were not looking for a replica but it would be good if we coined a brand and its logo and used it to brand the virtual space, gave nice interface display, say something like honeycomb display of participants or circular display with interesting value added features and security features. A thoughtful colour pallet should be used. A crisp description would definitely help.
The second question was again communication based where the students had to design Emojis for the following:
(a) see you again (b) I don’t know (c) good morning (d) good night (e) sh...
The advice here would be not to go with conventional circular yellow emojis, rather stylize an animated face and use interesting prop graphics too with a signature look that should be consistent through all five in terms of its presentation.
The third question asked the students to choose any musical instrument and depict any four festivals each in a given box.
There were clear instructions to innovate, design, change shape, colour, pattern of the instrument. The language of the question left room for varied interpretation as to if the students had to choose one instrument and interpret it for four different festivals differently or four different instruments could be used for each festival separately. Since the instrument could be completely renovated in terms of its shape and form as well, it would be very interesting to see one instrument take four completely different ‘avataar’s’ provided the nature of the instrument stays uncompromised in its usage i.e. a string instrument should remain one as a percussion instrument should have its classification and signature intact. However, choosing a different instrument for every festival would also stand correct if one can justify the correlation of the same to the choice of the festival depicted.
Wishing All the Luck once again!

There is no fixed number of mock tests one should take before the NIFT Entrance Exam. A candidate should take at least one mock test daily for the NIFT Entrance Preparation. 10-15 mock tests will really help in preparing for the exam.
