Commonly asked questions
Q:   What are passing marks in GATE exam?
A:

Passing marks in GATE exam is different for all 30 papers. The GATE qualifying mark for PSUs recruitment is also different. Candidates appearing in any GATE paper have to obtain the minimum mark in order to be declared qualified for the exam. Only qualified candidates are considered for admission to MTech/MSc/PhD programs and the MHRD scholarship. Candidates can check the previous year GATE cutoff for various papers on the Shiksha page or from the GATE official website.

Q:   What are the eligibility criteria for COAP?
A:
It is advised that the candidates check the eligibility criteria before COAP 2023 registration. Applications from candidates who do not meet the eligibility conditions are liable to be rejected. Therefore, all candidates must fulfil all the eligibility conditions. Check below for the eligibility criteria: - The candidate must be an Indian national. - Candidates must have a valid GATE score, I. e. , be qualified in 2023/2022/2021. - In the case of more than one valid scorecard, candidates must provide the scorecard with a better score or rank. - Candidates must check the eligibility criteria of the respective institute before applying. Read more about COAP Counselling: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/coap-counselling.
Q:   For how many papers can one student apply in GATE 2026?
A:

Students applying for GATE 2025 can opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations. Earlier, the candidates could apply to appear in only one subject. As a candidate can appear in only two papers (only approved set) of the 30 papers for which the GATE 2025 will be conducted, they must carefully choose the papers they wish to write. A candidate is expected to appear in the papers appropriate to the discipline of his or her qualifying degree. However, he or she is free to choose any paper according to his or her admission plan, keeping in mind the GATE eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he or she wishes to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria at any particular institute, the candidate is advised to refer to the websites of that institute. Those candidates opting for two paper combinations for GATE 2025 have a primary choice of paper as their default choice. The second choice of paper has to be chosen from the combinations allowed. Listed combinations are only allowed, and those that are not listed are not allowed. For more detail Read: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-pattern.

Q:   Can I get into IIT with 40 marks in GATE?
A:

No, a GATE score of 40 marks is relatively low for IITs and popular branches like CSE, ME, EE, and ME. The score is considered below average. However, if you score around 40 marks in GATE, you can opt for a branch or institution with less competition. Otherwise, you can attempt GATE next year with more practice and revision.
