Who Can Apply for a Certificate of Practice?

It is very important to understand who can apply for COP and who can not. Read the complete list below:

  • Enrolled Advocates: Any person whose name appears on the Roll of Advocates maintained by a State Bar Council, after obtaining an LL.B. (3-year or 5-year) from a university recognized by the Bar Council of India.
  • AIBE Qualifiers: Only those enrolled advocates who have passed the All India Bar Examination are eligible to receive the CoP and continue practicing law in India

Eligibility to Apply for CoP

  • Academic Qualification: Must hold a 3-year or 5-year LLB degree from a BCI-recognised institution.
  • Enrollment: Must be provisionally enrolled as an advocate with any State Bar Council.
  • AIBE Clearance: Must have cleared the All India Bar Examination.
  • Age & Nationality: There is no upper or lower age limit, and only Indian nationals (or those meeting BCI’s residency requirements) may apply

To convert an AIBE pass into a Certificate of Practice, candidates must meet the following additional benchmarks:

  • Minimum Marks:

General/OBC: ≥ 40% in the AIBE

SC/ST/PWD: ≥ 35% in the AIBE 

  • Validity: The AIBE Result remains valid for a specified period as notified by the BCI (check the latest notification on the official AIBE site).

Steps to Fill AIBE CoP Application

Candidates can check the important steps to fill the AIBE CoP Application below:

  • Go to the official AIBE website; i.e. allindiabarexamination.com
  • Check AIBE Result
  • Click on the relevant “AIBE 20 Result” link, enter roll number and date of birth, then download your scorecard
  • Register on State Bar Council Portal
  • Create/log in to your account on your State Bar Council’s website using your provisional enrollment number.
  • Verify personal and professional details, including AIBE roll number and enrollment number
  • Submit CoP Application
  • Locate the “Apply for Certificate of Practice” section.
  • Fill in the online form with accurate details matching your official documents.
  • Upload Documents & Pay Fees
  • Upload scanned copies of required documents (see next section) and pay the CoP issuance fee as prescribed by your State Bar Council.
  • Upon successful verification of your application and documents by the State Bar Council, your Certificate of Practice will be issued, often downloadable from the portal or sent via post 

How to Enroll with State Bar Councils?

Candidates can check the simple steps given below to enroll with the State Bar Council:

  • Obtain Enrolment Form: Download from the State Bar Council’s website or collect in person from their office.
  • Fill & Attach Documents: Complete the form carefully, attach attested copies of all required documents (diplomas, certificates, ID proofs, etc.).
  • Fee Payment: Pay the prescribed enrollment fee (varies by State Bar Council).
  • Submission: Submit the form and documents either online or in person, as per your council’s guidelines.
  • Verification & Ceremony: After document verification, you will be invited for an enrollment ceremony before the council’s member–in–charge, where you’ll take the oath and formally join the Roll of Advocates 

Documents Required to Enroll in a State Bar Council

The list of documents needed to enroll in a state bar council are as following:

  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets
  • LL.B. degree and all semester/year mark sheets
  • An attendance certificate from your law college/university
  • Passport-size photographs in formal attire
  • Character certificate (from a gazetted officer or college principal)
  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, or Passport) & proof of date of birth
  • Address proof (rent agreement with landlord’s ID if practising outside home state)
  • Affidavit as per State Bar Council requirement

Final semester candidates of LLB without backlogs are eligible to apply for AIBE-20 exam. Because you are in 5th semester of LLB and AIBE 20 will be held in December 2025. So not eligible for AIBE 20.
