The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati paid tribute to the life and legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on the 13th anniversary of his passing. Hosted by Team Bohagor Duwardolit, the Assamese students' community at IIT Guwahati, the event honoured Dr. Hazarika’s immense contributions to music, literature, and the cultural heritage of Assam and India.

Over 200 participants from the IIT Guwahati community gathered for the occasion, with a special highlight being an engaging session featuring Dr. Hazarika’s sister, Smt. Stuti Patel Hazarika. She shared touching insights into her brother's life, inspirations, and the lasting impact of his work on Assamese society and beyond.

About Dr. Bhupen Hazarika

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, celebrated as the "Bard of the Brahmaputra," created works that transcended cultural and geographical boundaries, weaving themes of social justice, unity, and human compassion. Born in Sadiya, Assam, in 1926, he began his musical journey early and later returned to Assam after studying in the United States, determined to use his talents as a force for social change. His compositions highlighted issues of communal harmony, rural life, and the empowerment of marginalized communities, resonating deeply with audiences and inspiring generations.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s music, deeply rooted in Assamese folk traditions and universal themes, has left an enduring legacy. Iconic songs like Bistirno Parore, Manuhe Manuhor Babe, and Ganga Behti Ho Kyun embody his philosophy of inclusivity and compassion. Awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019, Dr. Hazarika was celebrated for his invaluable contributions to India’s artistic and social fabric, inspiring generations to harness the power of art to foster unity and empathy.

The event began with a pushpanjali (floral tribute) in memory of Dr. Hazarika, followed by an address from IIT Guwahati's Director, Prof. Devendra Jalihal. He said, “We are privileged to honour Dr. Bhupen Hazarika not only as a musician but as a visionary who dedicated his life to social change through art. His message of diversity, empathy, and shared humanity continues to resonate deeply. Standing here in an auditorium named after him, I feel deeply honoured to celebrate his legacy. We are fortunate to have his sister, Smt. Stuti Patel Hazarika, is with us today to share her memories and insights, which bring us closer to understanding the extraordinary artist and visionary he was.”
