Revised JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern

JEE Main 2025: How Would Discontinuation of Optional Questions Affect Students

With the revision of the JEE Main 2025 exam pattern, there is a curiosity among the candidates about how will this change affect them. Previously, until 2024, the National Testing Agency (NTA) allowed candidates to attempt any 5 out of 10 questions in section B as a flexible measure to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This approach was originally implemented as a temporary solution and has been retained until the present, given the unique circumstances during that period. However, with the United Nations World Health Organization declaring the pandemic no longer a public health emergency, the NTA has opted to revert to the traditional exam format for JEE Main in 2025, thereby discontinuing the temporary option. This move aligns with a return to standard testing protocols.

How will Discontinuation of Optional Questions in JEE Main Impact Students?

Students will now have to focus on completing the entire JEE Main syllabus and selective preparation will no longer help. However, students who have been preparing for JEE using pattern-proof materials and testing methodologies will feel no impact of this change.

As per JEE expert Mr Ramesh Batlish, managing partner and head of FIITJEE Noida Centre:

Students would now have to prepare all chapters each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for those opting for Paper-1 of JEE Main 2025 ( BE/BTech). Even those opting for Paper-2A  (BArch) and Paper-2B (BPlanning) would have to cover all chapters in Mathematics. Cutoffs would get impacted (slightly lower down) as there is negative marking and no optional questions now. Some Students doing selective study may feel the pressure to now study all chapters.

NTA will soon release the JEE Main 2025 information brochure with further details of the changed exam pattern. The JEE Main 2025 online application form will be also released in due course on the official website - nta.ac.in and jeemain.nta.nic.in.
