CLAT 2027 Subjects: Check Topics, Syllabus and Preparation Tips

CLAT 2027 will be conducted on December 6. The Consortium has notified the CLAT Syllabus and its subjects on its official portal. Candidates can see the CLAT Subjects in detail on this page.

CLAT Subject List 2027

CLAT 2027 registrations are ongoing and the last date to apply for the exam is October 31. The Consortium will soon notify the CLAT application Correction dates. The Consortium released the official CLAT Notification 2027 on July 22, notifying all the important dates for the exam.

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) notified the CLAT syllabus 2027 on its official website - consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The CLAT subjects are notified in the official syllabus released by the Consortium on its portal.

There is no change in the CLAT Syllabus and its subjects. The exam syllabus review and reforms are due for the next year's exam. Before going into deep details of CLAT subjects, let us see the paper format first.

CLAT 2027 Paper Format

The candidate should note that the CLAT paper is mainly a passage-based paper. In each subject, there will be passage-based questions where the candidates need to read the passage and answer according to it. 

In most cases, the section will be a passage of 400 to 450 words. There will be two types of passages. In case the passage is given in the paper and the source is not given, the candidates are advised to answer the questions based on the facts and figures in the given passage only.

But, in case the source of the passage is a newspaper (as given in the Current Affairs and General Knowledge section), the questions can ask the facts and information related to the Current Event. The question can ask any associated information related to that event, be it Current Affairs or General Knowledge.

CLAT Subjects

The CLAT exam tests the candidate's knowledge of English, Current Affairs, General Knowledge, and legal and logical reasoning. The CLAT exam has 5 sections, but there is no sectional cutoff. But to get into the desired NLU, the candidate must score in all the sections to get the call from the best NLUs.

The consortium notifies the approximate number of questions which will be asked from each subject. The candidates need to prepare all the CLAT Subjects to score as much as they can to get a good NLU.

CLAT English

There will be around 22 to 26 questions based on English. These questions will be based on a passage given in the paper. The standard of the passage will be of Class XII. The passage will be based on contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing. The candidates will be required to answer the questions based on the passage and the knowledge of English they have accumulated till now.

As per the official notice, the candidates will be required to demonstrate their comprehension and language skills, including the   abilities to: 

• Read and comprehend the main point discussed in the passage, as well as any arguments and viewpoints discussed or set out in the passage;

• Draw inferences and conclusions based on the passage;

• Summarise the passage;

• Compare and contrast the different arguments or viewpoints set out in the passage; and

• Understand the meaning of various words and phrases in the context that they are used in the passage.

The candidates are advised to read the newspaper and other books to increase their reading speed because most of the questions are passage-based.

CLAT Current Affairs, including General Knowledge 

Candidates are advised to prepare the Current Events of National and International Importance of the last 10 months. The Consortium gives experts from the Newspapers related to any national and international event and asks for facts and information related to that event. 

Candidates are advised to prepare current events from a monthly magazine and General Knowledge topics related to those current events.

In addition to that, the Consortium also asks about important events from the Indian Freedom Struggle and important revolutionaries who contributed to Indian independence, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Jawaharlal Nehru. Other important topics for Current Affairs and General Knowledge, as mentioned on the official portal, are given below:

• Contemporary events of significance from India and the world;
• Arts and culture;
• International affairs; and
• Historical events of continuing significance.

CLAT Legal Reasoning

The Legal Reasoning subject is the major shareholder in the CLAT question paper. The Consortium ask 28-32 questions or roughly 25% of the paper, from Legal Reasoning Topics. These questions are also passage-based and taken from the Supreme Court and other legal commentaries. 

Candidates are expected to answer based on the information given in the passages only, but in most cases, the candidates are required to apply their knowledge of Law and the Constitution because the passages are not imaginary; they are taken from Supreme Court Decisions. The excerpts can be from legal cases which overturned the Constitutional Amendments and sometimes strike down the laws passed by Parliament.

CLAT Legal Reasoning Topics as mentioned on the official portal:

• Identify and infer the rules and principles set out in the passage;
• Apply such rules and principles to various fact situations; and
• Understand how changes to the rules or principles may alter their application to various fact situations.

CLAT Logical Reasoning

The logical reasoning questions asked in the paper will also be based on passages. The candidates will be tested of their knowledge to 

• Recognise an argument, its premises and conclusions;
• Read and identify the arguments set out in the passage;
• Critically analyse patterns of reasoning, and assess how conclusions may depend on particular premises or evidence, and how conclusions may be strengthened or weakened as a consequence of an alteration in premises or supporting facts;
• Infer what follows from the passage and apply these inferences to new situations;
• Draw relationships and analogies, identify contradictions and equivalence, and assess the effectiveness of arguments.

The candidates are advised to read these passages with full attention to detail because the candidates will be required to answer the questions asked based on the passage. In addition to that, the candidates must draw a pictorial depiction of the information while reading the passage; it will help the candidates to quickly answer the Logical Reasoning questions.

CLAT Quantitative Techniques

This section will ask questions based on a short set of facts or propositions, or other textual representations of numerical information. The candidates will be expected to derive, infer and manipulate the numerical information given in the passage.

Candidates should note that the calculation will involve the basic concepts of Mathematics such as 

• Average
• Ratio and Proportion
• Date Interpretation
• Data Comparisons
• Basic Algebra
• Mensuration 
• Statistical Estimations.

Candidates would be required to do calculations and extract the answers from the given set of information.
