Number of aspirants appearing for NEET in Odia, Marathi, Kannada declines

Only 822 students opted for Odia language in NEET exam in 2020 against 31,490 applications in 2019. The number of medical aspirants appearing for NEET in Gujarati, Kannada and Marathi languages also reduced in 2020 as compared to 2019. A total of 59,055 students opted for Gujarati in 2020 against 59,395 in 2019. Similarly, only 1,005 and 6,258 students chose to take the test in Kannada and Marathi in 2020 against 2,305 and 31,239 the preceding year, respectively. However, a marginal rise has been seen in the number of candidates writing the exam in Hindi and Bengali as compared to 2019.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is a national-level test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBBS/BDS courses and other undergraduate medical courses in recognised medical/dental and other colleges/institutes in India. It is held in 11 languages, i.e. English, Hindi, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil and Telugu.  

As many as 15.19 lakh students registered for NEET and 14.10 lakh appeared for it in 2019, whereas in 2020, 15.97 lakh candidates registered for the exam and 13.66 lakh actually took it.

English remains the most-preferred medium as 79.08 per cent preferred to take the exam in English in 2020, followed by Hindi with 12.80 per cent students opting for it.

The number of takers for Assamese, Tamil and Telugu languages also increased in 2020 as compared to 2019. A total of 5,328 students chose Assamese as the medium for the test in 2020 against 1,796 the preceding year. Similarly, 17,101 candidates opted for Tamil and 1,624 went for Telugu medium against 1,017 and 700 in 2019, respectively.

Yes, it is mandatory to appear for the ToGIGE even if the candidates have appeared for the NEET exam. The ToGIGE is a part of the selection process post the NEET exam. Those aspirants who clear the NEET cutoff are only eligible to appear for this test.

Yes, qualifying the NEET entrance exam is mandatory for MBBS admission in Kerala colleges, including for both government and private quota seats, as per NMC regulations. Candidates just have to clear an entrance exam and participate in counselling process for admission.

Yes, the BCECE Biology syllabus is the same as the NEET Biology syllabus. The chapters and topics are from Class 11 and 12 curriculum. The Biology subject is divided into Botany and Zoology.
