IIT Mandi Mandates ‘Introduction to Consciousness and Holistic Wellbeing’ for Student Development

IIT Mandi's IKSMHA offers courses in cognitive psychology, biosignals, Yogasutra, contemplative psychology, Sankhya philosophy, and Indian astronomy, while IIT Mandi primarily focuses on engineering and technology.
The Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSMHA) Centre at IIT Mandi conducts scientific research on the mind, brain, and consciousness with a focus on mental well-being. Research areas include cognitive matter, bio-switches of consciousness, and the effects of practices like yoga, meditation, music, and other performing arts on stress, anxiety, sleep quality, and Ayurveda principles.
However, IIT Mandi primarily focuses on engineering and technology, upholding rigorous academic standards. Complementary subjects are integrated into the curriculum but do not replace core engineering courses, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education.
Mandatory Course on Introduction to consciousness and holistic wellbeing
The Senate-approved course "Introduction to Consciousness and Holistic Wellbeing" is mandatory for all undergraduates at IIT Mandi. It emphasizes universal value systems and holistic development through modules like Yoga, guided meditation, physical exercise, and community services. This course marks a pioneering effort in integrating holistic wellness into education. This program has been developed as per the mandate of the Ministry of Education and with Senate approval.
An in-house research study conducted as part of this course assessed students using standard psychological questionnaires and non-invasive physiological measurements at the beginning and end of the course. Statistical analysis showed significant positive improvements in mood states, stress reduction, subjective well-being, parasympathetic activity, and sleep quality, indicating that the course's practices and teachings enhance overall student well-being.
Courses at the Postgraduate Level
The centre offers a range of postgraduate courses, including Cognitive Psychology, Biosignals and Biomarkers, Cognitive Neuroscience, Introduction to Yogasutra, Contemplative Psychology, Sankhya Philosophy, and Indian Astronomy. Undergraduate students can also opt for these courses as electives.
Around 40 researchers are working across these areas in the centre equipped with modern scientific tools and analytical techniques. More than 20 faculty members are associated with this program either as course instructors or research supervisors.
IIT Mandi believes that students will gain valuable insights into ancient wisdom and its contemporary relevance, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural roots. The IKS course will complement their technical education, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and a holistic worldview.
