UPSC 2025 Exam Structure
The Union Public Service Commission conduct the Civil Service Exam every year to recruit candidates for the most reputed posts across the nation. The UPSC changed the Civil Service Exam structure way back in 1979 when the Prelims Exam stage was introduced. The UPSC Civil Service Exam comprises three stages:
- Prelims (Objective)
- Mains (Descriptive)
- Interview (Personality Test)
The candidates should note that there are two objective-type papers in the UPSC prelims exam. The candidates are required to appear in both papers in the prelims exam only then will they be considered eligible for marking. The marks secured in the UPSC General Studies Paper 2(CSAT) are qualifying in nature.
UPSC 2025 Exam Pattern
The Union Public Service Commission released the UPSC (IAS) exam pattern 2025 in the official notification. The candidates can see below the UPSC (IAS) Prelims exam pattern 2025 as mentioned in the official notification.

The candidates should note that there will be a negative marking in the UPSC prelims exam. The candidates can see below the quantum of negative marking in the UPSC 2025 prelims exam.
Negative Marking in UPSC 2025 Prelims Exam
The Commission mention the details of the negative marking in the UPSC 2025 prelims exam in the following manner:
Paper |
Marks for Correct Answer |
Negative Marks Assigned for Incorrect Answer |
---|---|---|
General Studies Paper- I |
2 |
-0.66 |
General Studies Paper-II (Aptitude Test) |
2.5 |
-0.83 |
The candidates should abstain from marking the answers based on their wild guess, otherwise, the negative marking will take a heavy toll on their aggregate marks.
UPSC 2025 Syllabus
The UPSC syllabus is the most important component of UPSC preparation. The candidates need to prepare for all the topics mentioned in the official notification. The important point to consider is that the Commission does not mention the UPSC IAS syllabus in detail. It only mentions the names of the topics. The candidates are expected to expand the topic to their entirety and prepare all the subtopics, whether mentioned or not. The candidates can see below the UPSC 2025 Prelims Syllabus:
- Current events of national and international importance (Current Affairs)
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
- Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc
- Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc
- General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
- General Science
The candidates should select each topic and prepare a proper plan to cover all the subtopics within time.
The Commission does not mention the weightage of the topic, and hence, the UPSC is free to ask any number of questions on any topic. The candidates are advised not to leave any topic because it can be a spoilsport in the IAS prelims exam.
The UPSC Prelims will be a qualifying exam only, and the marks scored in the prelims exam will not be considered for any other purposes. The UPSC prelims qualified candidates will be called for the UPSC main exam.
UPSC 2025 Prelims Preparation Strategy
The candidates should note that only some days are left for the exam, and most of the candidates are only practising with the mock test papers and UPSC previous year question papers. This will be the best strategy to cover the whole UPSC syllabus in the shortest period. The candidates are advised to see the official UPSC answer key to know the actual correct answers to the previous year’s IAS questions.
The candidates must see the previous year’s UPSC prelims cutoffs and analyse the trends of the qualifying UPSC prelims score. Though each year is different, the candidates can guess the number of correct questions required to clear the UPSC prelims exam.
The only mantra that we would suggest to clear the UPSC exam is the following.
- Stay calm and read the question patiently.
- On the day of the UPSC prelims exam, candidates feel anxiety and nervousness. They are advised to stay calm to perform better. If the candidate reads and understands the question correctly, half the task is done.
Solve the UPSC Question Paper in Rounds
- Do not try to solve the paper in one go. First, read the question, and if you know the answer, mark it carefully on the OMR sheet. The candidates are asked to mark the answer with a ballpoint pen, and it would be difficult to delete the marks of the pen from the OMR.
- If you can answer the question through the elimination of answer options, answer the question on the question paper and do not mark the answer on the OMR sheet. Mark this question to answer it in the second round.
- Read the next question, and if you don’t know the answer, leave it for the second round.
- In the second round, check the OMR sheet and jump to the questions where the answer is not marked.
- The UPSC maintain a standard of the question paper every year. This is the reason that when a person qualifies the prelims exam once, it becomes easy in the later attempts.
Mantra to Succeed in UPSC Prelims
-
- Answer the easy questions correctly. If you answer them incorrectly, your selection becomes difficult.
- Try to answer the moderately difficult level questions through elimination and intelligent/calculated guess.
- Try to answer some of the hard questions not all keeping in mind the negative marking.
The candidate should keep visiting this page to know the difficulty level of the UPSC prelims exam and the student reaction video.
