IIT JAM is conducted in online mode as a computer-based test (CBT) for a total of seven Science subjects – Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biotechnology, and Mathematical Statistics. The exam pattern for all the papers is same wherein a paper is divided into three sections:
- Section A: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) – In this section, candidates are given four choices and they have to mark the one correct answer.
- Section B: Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) – In this section, candidates are given four choices and they have to mark one or more correct answers.
- Section C: Numerical Answer Type (NAT) – In this section, the answer for each question is a signed real number. No choices are shown for these questions. It may be noted that to enter the answer for NAT questions candidates can only use a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad.
