IIT JAM 2026 examination was conducted on February 15, 2026. The exam was conducted in two sessions:
Session 1 - 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Session 2 - 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
JAM 2026 exam for all the Test Papers was conducted as a computer-based Test (CBT) where the candidates are shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen.
Section - A contains a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each MCQ has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer. Candidates can mark their answer by clicking one of the choices. A wrong answer will result in negative marks. For each wrong answer to 1 mark
questions, 1/3 mark is deducted and similarly for each wrong answer to 2 marks questions, 2/3 mark is deducted.

Candidates had to select the IIT JAM exam centre city while filling out the application form. They had to enter as many as two exam cities in preferred order. The final decision is made by the exam authorities.
Candidates have to follow the steps given below to select the exam city of JAM 2026:
1. Visit the JAM 2026 website.
2. In the Exam City Preference section of the JAM 2026 application form, select three cities in preferential order.
3. Complete the application process by paying the requisite application fee. The exam city preference can be changed during the application correction window.
In advance city intimation slip document candidates will only be intimated about the city where their exam centre has been allotted. The objective of this document is to help candidates prepare in advance regarding exam day travel or commute.
How to Select IIT JAM 2026 Exam Centre?
Candidates had to select the JAM exam centre while filling out the application form. They could make a preference for three test cities. Students had to select the JAM exam city closer to their hometown. This reduces the travelling duration. The process to select the exam centre for IIT JAM 2026 is mentioned below.
- The choice of examination city will also determine the zone.
- The second and third choice cities of the exam have to be indicated from the same zone as the first city.
- If any of the selected exam cities cannot be allotted to a candidate for operational reasons, they will be assigned an alternative city within the same zone.
- The selection of zones and exam cities is made at the time of applying online by using the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS).

Non-permissible Items at IIT JAM 2026 Exam Centre
The following items or objects were not allowed to be carried to the IIT JAM 2026 exam centres.
- Stationery items such as test-based material (written/printed), papers, notes, Pencil box, pouches, geometry box, pen, scale/ruler, eraser, etc.
- Electronic devices such as calculators, cameras, electronic pens, scanners, etc.
- Accessories such as bags, belts, caps, goggles, wallets, etc.
- Devices used for communication, such as mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth, fitness bands, earphones, pager, etc.
- Eatables (packed or home-cooked), thermos, etc.
Candidates are also not allowed to carry any food or drinks inside the exam centre, with the exception of a transparent water bottle and 50 ml sanitiser bottle.

Before taking the IIT JAM mock test candidates can find important particulars here:
- The total time allotted to take the examination is 180 minutes.
- The clock will be initiated at the server. The countdown timer shown at the top right corner of the screen will show you the remaining time you have to complete the examination. The examination will automatically finish when the clock reaches zero. You do not have to finish or submit your examination.
To answer a question, you would go through the following actions:
- Click on the question number in the Question Palette on the right of your screen to go to the numbered question. Be advised that after using this option, your answer for the last question won't be saved.
- Click on Save & Next to save your answer for the last question and to go to the next question.
- Click on Mark for Review & Next to save your answer to the last question and to mark it for review and to go the next question.
