IIT Patna is ranked 160 by the QS Ranking 2025 under the Asian University Rankings - Southern Asia category and 541-560 by the QS Ranking 2025 under the Asian University Rankings category. Indian Institute of Technology Patna is an esteemed Engineering institute in the country. IIT Patna has secured ranks from various national and international bodies. The Institute is one of the eight new IITs formed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It was established in 2008. It offers courses in Engineering. No, there is no provision of a student studying free at IIT Patna as per the official website. However, IIT Patna provides a range of Merit-Cum-Means scholarships to meritorious and needy students. Any UG (BTech) student or MSc student can receive these scholarships. The criteria to receive is that the annual income of a student's parents/ guardian/ family from all sources in the preceding financial year must not be more than INR 4.50 lakh. The flagship course of IIT Patna is BTech. The four year BTech programme is offered in 11 specialisations. Admission to all BTech courses is subject to a valid score in JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. Students also need to go through the counselling process conducted by JoSAA for final seat allotment. The eligibility criteria for admission is that students must have cleared their HSC/10+2 with minimum 75% aggregate. The total seat intake is 638.
IIT Patna offers BTech, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes through its 10 departments. IIT Patna offers four-year BTech programmes at the undergraduate level in 11 specialisations. A two-year MTech programme in 15 specialisations and two-year MSc programmes in three specialisations at the postgraduate level. All 10 departments of IIT Patna also offer a three-year PhD programme. The mode of IIT Patna admission is online. Admission to BTech is based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores, followed by JoSSA counseling. IIT Patna course admissions 2025 is conducted through online registrations. Interested candidates can visit the official website and fill out the application form before the last date of application. Admission to BTech is based on JoSSA counselling, and admission to MTech is based on GATE scores, followed by PI and COAP rounds. Candidates with exceptional academic records get direct admission to the PhD course.
1. IIT Patna Application Process
Candidates seeking admission at IIT Patna are required to complete the application form for the course-specific entrance exam. For example, for BTech, candidates are required to apply for JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced application. Similarly, for the MSc, IIT JAM application form is required to be completed.
2. Selection Rounds
IIT Patna admits students to BTech courses based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores. Candidates are allotted seats in JoSAA Counselling for BTech. Admission to MTech is through GATE followed by COAP Counselling. The institute considers IIT JAM and CCMN Counselling for MSc courses. 3. Release of Cutoff list, Counselling and Admission Confirmation
The cutoff for BTech, MTech and MSc courses is released by the respective counselling bodies. For merit-based courses, IIT Patna Bihar will release the course-wise merit list on its official website. As per the merit list, candidates are called for counselling for seat allotment. Shortlisted candidates and then required to pay the admission fee to confirm their seats.

The IIT Patna Bihar 2024 cutoffs for Courses have been released for BTech, Integrated BTech, and BArch admissions. In Round 4, JoSAA cutoffs spanned from the 3074 to the 14566 values. Among these, the B.Tech. in CSE stands out as a fiercely competitive option for General category students under the AI Quota.
In a comparison of the Indian Institute of Technology IIT Patna cutoff in 2024 with that of the preceding two years, it’s observed that IIT Patna has experienced a declining pattern in its closing ranks. The Round 4 cutoff for the BTech course stood at 2722 in 2023 and 2536 in 2022.

Yes, IIT Patna currently has two boy’s hostels and one girl’s hostel that provide comfortable accommodation and are located close to the academic area. There are two married scholar’s apartments (located near campus) for PhD and Master’s students. The hostels are located in a peaceful, clean, and aesthetic environment on campus.
