IIT Patna Highlights 2025
IIT Patna is ranked 160 by the QS Ranking 2025 under the Asian University Rankings - Southern Asia category and 541-560 by the QS Ranking 2025 under the Asian University Rankings category. Indian Institute of Technology Patna is an esteemed Engineering institute in the country. IIT Patna has secured ranks from various national and international bodies. The Institute is one of the eight new IITs formed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It was established in 2008. It offers courses in Engineering. IIT Patna is an Institute of National Importance (INL). IIT Patna is approved by UGC and AICTE. IIT Patna offers UG, PG and PhD courses across 10 departments. IIT Patna placement 2026 is ongoing and will continue till May 2026. At the end of Phase 1 placement 2025-26, BTech placement rate was 54.34%.
Earlier, the placement rate at IIT Patna stood at 77.92% and 61.01% for BTech and MTech during placements 2024.
After JEE session 2 is completed, only those candidates who are aiming for IITs need to start preparing for JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main. IIT Patna offers BTech, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes through its 10 departments. IIT Patna offers four-year BTech programmes at the undergraduate level in 11 specialisations. A two-year MTech programme in 15 specialisations and two-year MSc programmes in three specialisations at the postgraduate level. All 10 departments of IIT Patna also offer a three-year PhD programme. The mode of IIT Patna admission is online. Admission to BTech is based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores, followed by JoSSA counseling. Admission to MTech and MSc is subject to GATE and IIT JAM, respectively.
The total tuition fee of MTech is INR 80000 to 5 lakh.

IIT Patna course admissions 2025 is conducted through online registrations. Interested candidates can visit the official website and fill out the application form before the last date of application. Admission to BTech is based on JoSSA counselling, and admission to MTech is based on GATE scores, followed by PI and COAP rounds. Candidates with exceptional academic records get direct admission to the PhD course.
1. IIT Patna Application Process
Candidates seeking admission at IIT Patna are required to complete the application form for the course-specific entrance exam. For example, for BTech, candidates are required to apply for JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced application. Similarly, for the MSc, IIT JAM application form is required to be completed.
2. Selection Rounds
IIT Patna admits students to BTech courses based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores. Candidates are allotted seats in JoSAA Counselling for BTech. Admission to MTech is through GATE followed by COAP Counselling. The institute considers IIT JAM and CCMN Counselling for MSc courses. 3. Release of Cutoff list, Counselling and Admission Confirmation
The cutoff for BTech, MTech and MSc courses is released by the respective counselling bodies. For merit-based courses, IIT Patna Bihar will release the course-wise merit list on its official website. Yes, IIT Patna currently has two boy’s hostels and one girl’s hostel that provide comfortable accommodation and are located close to the academic area. There are two married scholar’s apartments (located near campus) for PhD and Master’s students. The hostels are located in a peaceful, clean, and aesthetic environment on campus. Each hostel in the institute is self-contained with amenities such as a reading room, an indoor games room, a gymnasium, and a dining hall with a mess, along with various food joints and a canteen in the food court. In addition to the adequate health care facilities, all the students are covered under the Vidyarthi Mediclaim Insurance Policy. No, the GATE registrations for IIT Patna 2026 MSc admissions are no longer open. The GATE registrations were closed in the month of November 2025. The GATE is scheduled to take place in the month of February 2026. Candidates who failed to register for the GATE are required to wait for the GATE 2027
