Scope for Improvement
While success stories dominate, 32% of the voters indicated they could not meet the cutoff this year. GATE, known for its tough competition and rigorous standards, remains a challenging exam even for well-prepared students.
For 2022, cut off was 61 for General category candidates in All India quota for B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering in IIT Bombay - Indian Institute of Technology. For female candidates in general category under All India quota, 305 was the closing rank. B.Tech cut off varies depending on the category and domicile/quota of the applicant.
IIT Dhanbad offers BTech admisison based on JEE Advanced scores, whereas NIT Trichy admission is based on candidates' performance in the JEE Main scores. GATE CSE is considered the most demanding branch in GATE M.Tech admissions. Due to high competition, the cutoff is usually high in top-ranked institutes. 80+ marks, out of 100, is the safe score in GATE computer Science and information technology. Candidates can get admissions to top IITs and NITs with this score.
The GATE branches/subject codes that demand for the highest GATE cutoff scores are -
- Computer Science and Information Technology
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
For these candidates, it's important to remember that missing the cutoff is not the end. Many toppers and successful professionals have stories of resilience and second (or third) attempts before achieving their goals. With focused preparation, strategic planning, and lessons from this attempt, bouncing back stronger is achievable.

Aspirants Aiming Higher Despite Clearing
Interestingly, although 9% of the participants met the cutoff, they plan to attempt GATE again next year. This reflects a different but equally inspiring ambition—the pursuit of excellence.
Clearing the basic cutoff may not always guarantee top-tier admissions or PSU placements. Many students aim for higher scores to secure IIT M.Tech seats, research fellowships, or PSU jobs like IOCL, ONGC, and BHEL, where competition is fierce and top ranks matter.
This group embodies the "good is not good enough" spirit — a defining quality of GATE achievers.

With a PwD category GATE ECE score of 397 in 2025, you have a strong chance of getting into reputable institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs. A score of 397 is well above the typical qualifying cutoff for PwD candidates in GATE ECE, which is around 226-232 out of 1000

GATE qualifying cutoff is the institute eligibility cutoff, and on the other hand, the GATE admission cutoff ensures a call for admission at IITs, NITs, IITs, and CFTIs. Check below in detail:
GATE Qualifying Cutoff: It is the minimum mark a candidate must score so that he or she is eligible for admission. But this does not mean that a candidate is selected for admission. Actually, it is fixed before the announcement of GATE results. It is announced by the conducting IIT and available on GOAPS. It includes qualifying marks for each paper.
Admission GATE Cutoffs: It is the final opening and closing rank score fixed by the participating institutes for the selection of candidates. It is to be noted here that meeting the admission GATE cutoff does not mean that the candidates will be selected for admission. It is fixed after the GATE result date. It is declared by the individual participating institutes and available on their respective counselling portals (CCMT/ COAP).
