IISc Bangalore admission is competitive due to high cutoff and limited seats. The entrance tests required for getting admission in the institute are taken by many. Hence, the chances of securing seat becomes less. Students are required to perform well in the entrance exam required for their course to get admission in the institute. In 2024, the JEE Main closing R1 cutoff for General category candidates was 903 for BSc (Research) in Physics.
No, NIT Trichy does not provide direct admission for BTech. NIT Trichy BTech admission is entrance-based. The institute accepts admission to the BTech course through a valid score of JEE Main. Every aspirant needs to qualify for the exam in order to get admission. Selected candidates further need to take part in JoSAA counselling as well. There is no other procedure for admission.
This year, IIT Roorkee conducted the GATE 2025 exam, which showed an impressive record in students scoring the perfect percentile and rank. Based on the GATE 2025 AIR list, which was released on March 25, more than 20 candidates have scored a GATE score of 1000 across various disciplines, such as civil engineering, computer science, architecture and planning, electronics and communication engineering and more. This year, 936019 candidates had registered for the GATE, out of which 747319 candidates appeared for the exam, which indicates that the competition for GATE 2025 admissions will be high.

PSU or MTech—The Right Research Can Lead You to the Right Future, and here's how to research relevant institutes, check eligibility, track past MTech and PSU cutoffs, and align your choices for maximum placement potential while attempting the GATE choice filling process.
Step 1: Know Your GATE Rank and Score
Before diving into research, understand where you stand. Here's what you can do.
- Firstly, check your GATE score, rank, normalised score, and GATE All India Rank.
- Now, compare it with the last five years' GATE cutoff of various top institutions (prioritise your dream college) to get a rough idea of where you might fit in or be eligible. You can also refer to the GATE top branches and past year cutoff trends to better understand the cutoff marks and analysis.
- BONUS TIP: Use the Shiksha GATE college predictors for quick insights and predictions based on your GATE scores and rank.
Pro Tip: Use data from at least 3–5 years of past GATE cutoffs to see trends in rank fluctuations and admission chances.
To be eligible for BSc an IISc Bangalore, candidates must meet with the minimum eligibility criteria set by the institute and go through the selection rounds accepted by the institute. Details around the same are as follows:
- Eligibility: A pass in Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects in their qualifying exam along with any other subjects with first class or 60% aggregate (relaxed to just pass for SC/ ST students)
- Selection: Merit list of one of the national examinations, among Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) KVPY (Stream-SA)/ JEE Main/ JEE Advanced/ NEET (UG) and IISER Aptitude Test
NOTE:
- Candidate must be qualified in any one of the exams mentioned above, and the exam result must be valid as on Aug 1 of the year of admission.
- IISER Aptitude Test is introduced as a new mode of entry for the academic year 2024. Candidates have to apply directly on the IISc admission portal to apply through this mode.
The admission to IIT Roorkee is based on entrance exam score of candidates. The institute provides admission to the candidates under two categories:
Category | Selection Criteria |
---|---|
Category 1 | (Graduates applying on the basis of CAT 2020 score) - CAT score: 60%, PI: 30%, Work experience: 10%
|
Category 2 | (IIT graduates admitted through JEE Advanced) - PI: 100% |

Step 2: Understand the GATE Counselling Process
Separate platforms are used for the GATE counselling admissions. Different institutes follow different counselling platforms:
- COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) – for IITs and IISc. Did not appear for GATE but want to pursue MTech at IIT? Check how to get into IITs without GATE scores?
- CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan) – for NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
- Direct Institute Admission – for some state universities, IITS or deemed universities.
- PSU Recruitment – varies by company and department.
Each process has its own timelines, eligibility rules, and options. It’s crucial to track deadlines and understand the rules before applying. The GATE COAP counselling Round 1 choice filling starts on May 17, and GATE CCMT counselling will begin soon. Candidates applying for IITs on their official websites must register and submit their COAP registration ID while filling out the IIT GATE 2025 application form.

Step 3: Identify Your Priorities
Everyone has different goals. So, you should ask yourself these three simple questions:
- Do you want to pursue core research or get a job post-MTech?
- Are you interested in PSU placements after GATE or startups?
- Would you prefer an IIT in a remote location or a top NIT/IIT in a city?
Now, based on the above questions, rank your preferences based on the following -
- Brand value of the institute
- Location and campus facilities
- Financial assistance offered in GATE
- Research output and faculty
- Placement records
- Alumni network
- Industry collaborations
- Fee structure and financial aid
Smart Tip: Don’t go by brand name alone—look at what’s relevant for your specific field (e.g., NIT Trichy may be better than some IITs in Civil or Mechanical)
Step 4: Deep-Dive into Department-Wise Details
Instead of focusing on the institute, zoom in on the specific department or specialisation you're interested in. Here’s what to look for:
- Course Curriculum - Go through the syllabus. Is it updated? Does it align with your interests?
- Faculty - Check the profiles, publications, and research areas of professors.
- Labs and Research Facilities - Are they well-equipped? Any centres of excellence?
- Ongoing Projects - Is the department involved in some interesting and unique government or industry projects?
- Past Placements - Look at the companies that recruit from that department and the average package.
Step 5: Use Online Platforms Wisely
Use digital tools and platforms to compare institutes smartly:
- NIRF Rankings - Gives an idea of the institute's reputation and performance.
- College and Institute Websites & Brochures - For curriculum, faculty, and placement stats.
- LinkedIn & Alumni Networks - Connect with recent graduates to get honest reviews.
- YouTube Vlogs & Student Testimonials - Many GATE toppers and M.Tech students share personal experiences.
- Quora & Reddit - Great for real-time answers and uncensored reviews (but verify facts).
Step 6: Make a College/Institute Checklist Based on the Data above
Once your research is done, build a college preference list in three tiers:
Tier 1: Dream Colleges
- IITs or IISc with cutoffs just above or near your rank.
- Apply strategically; you may get them in later rounds.
Also Read: GATE 2025 COAP counselling schedule revised
Tier 2: Target Colleges
- IITs/NITs/IIITs where your score aligns with past cutoffs.
- High probability of conversion.
Tier 3: Safe Colleges
- Institutes where the cutoff is below your rank.
- Use these to ensure you don’t miss out altogether.
Track down the GATE-cuttoff trends and keep a spreadsheet of - institute name, branch, cutoff scor/rank from past 3 to 5 years, placement details, and personal remarks. Doing this will allow you to analyse GATE cutoff trends and make realistic choices. GATE cutoffs can fluctuate, so having a buffer helps you stay prepared.
Step 7: Look out for Hidden Gems that offer MTech courses through GATE
Some lesser-known MTech institutes offer excellent value in specific areas after GATE. For example:
- IIIT Hyderabad known for Computer Science programs
- IIT BHU or ISM Dhanbad for Mining/Geology
- NIT Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal for core engineering branches
- BHU, BITS Pilani, Jadavpur University for select research-based programs
Research their offerings and don’t skip applying just because they aren’t “top IITs.”
Step 8: Consider ROI and Financial Aspects
M.Tech can be a costly affair in some institutes. Analyze:
- Total fees vs average placement
- Scholarship options available
- Cost of living in that city
- Availability of financial assistance or stipends
Remember, higher fees don't always mean better education—sometimes a low-cost NIT with great placements is smarter.

Step 9: Last, but not least - Stay Updated and Flexible with your choices
- For updates, keep checking official institute websites and education websites, such as Shiksha, COAP, and CCMT portals.
- Join Telegram or WhatsApp groups related to GATE 2025 counselling for peer discussions.
- Be flexible with choices—you may not get your first preference in early rounds, but better options often open up later.
Best MTech Engineering Colleges other than IITs and NITs
Apart from IITs and NITs, here are some top MTech colleges that one can consider for admissions through GATE scores -
- VIT Vellore
- DTU
- BITs Pilani
- Jadavpur University
- Thapar University
- SRM Institute of Science and Technology
Choosing the right college or institute after GATE is not just about prestige—it’s about fit. Your career goals, interests, and academic preferences should guide your GATE admission decision. With proper research and a smart, data-driven approach, you can avoid stress, skip the guesswork, and make an informed decision that pays off in the long run.
Smart research = Smart choices. Let your GATE scores open the right gates!

Admission to the BTech courses offered by IIT Madras are entrance-based and done on the basis of scores obtained in JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Seats are allocated through JoSAA counselling after the results of the entrance exams are out. Students who clear the IIT Madras BTech cutoff are then required to go through document verification and pay the required fees to complete the process.
