Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) is the application of science and mathematics to solve different problems and to research, design, develop, and test electronic equipment used in various systems. Engineers with specialization in Electronics and Communication also conceptualize and oversee the designing, development and manufacturing of communications and broadcast systems.

This stream of engineering also deals with the manufacturing of electronic devices, circuits, communications equipment, analogue transmission, basic electronics, and microprocessors. Various colleges across India offer Electronics and Communications Engineering at the undergraduate and postgraduate level leading to BTech (4 years) and MTech (2 years) degrees respectively.

Scope of Electronics and Communications Engineering

As it is one of the most widely preferred engineering branches among all, the number of students passing out from this branch is increasing every year. It is predicted that the jobs for engineers will grow by 7% from 2016 to 2026. Furthermore, it has also been found that employment in the ECE sector has amplified significantly in the last few years. In fact, according to a survey done jointly by ASSOCHAM and NEC Corp, the electronics market of India is predicted to reach $400 billion by the year 2023. Along with the private sector, various Public Sector Units (PSUs) like BHEL, BEL, TRAI, IOCL, ONGC, POSOCO, WBSEDCL and DRDO etc. accept the GATE score for recruitment of candidates in various positions. There is a great scope of job avenues in the following profiles for electronics and communication engineers in India and abroad:

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   For how many papers can one student apply in GATE 2024?
A:
Students applying for GATE 2024 can opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations. Earlier, the candidates could apply to appear in only one subject. As a candidate is allowed to appear in only two papers (only approved set) of the 29 papers for which the GATE 2024 will be conducted, they have to carefully make a choice of the papers they wish to write. A candidate is expected to appear in the papers appropriate to the discipline of his or her qualifying degree. However, he or she is free to choose any paper according to his or her admission plan, keeping in mind the GATE eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he or she wishes to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria at any particular institute, the candidate is advised to refer to the websites of that institute. Those candidates opting for two paper combinations for GATE 2024 have a primary choice of paper as their default choice. The second choice of paper has to be chosen from the allowed combinations. Listed combinations are only allowed, and those that are not listed are not allowed. For more detail Read: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-pattern.
Q:   After declining/rejecting the offer, can I be considered for subsequent offers for COAP rounds?
A:

After declining/rejecting the offer (s) in a particular round, you will not be considered for the same offer (s). In case, you have given higher preferences in M.Tech. Application, then you may be considered for the higher preferences in the subsequent round (s) of offers based on the availability of vacancies and merit list, within the rules of that institute. Also, after the last/final round at COAP no offers will be available at COAP. For any offer/admission related matter, candidates must visit the respective Academic Institutes Admission Portal.

Q:   What are passing marks in GATE exam?
A:

Passing marks in GATE exam is different for all 30 papers. The GATE qualifying mark for PSUs recruitment is also different. Candidates appearing in any GATE paper have to obtain the minimum mark in order to be declared qualified for the exam. Only qualified candidates are considered for admission to MTech/MSc/PhD programs and the MHRD scholarship. Candidates can check the previous year GATE cutoff for various papers on the Shiksha page or from the GATE official website.

Yes, you can get admission in M.Tech without GATE exam at MIT College of Management and Computer Application. In that case, you can appear for PERA CET or MIT-WPU CET exam and get a valid score for admission.
