A sub-branch in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Radio Frequency(RF) and Microwave Engineering deals with the designing, construction and operation of devices instrumental in transmitting or receiving radio and micro waves. An important aspect of our day to day life, RF and Microwave Engineering finds its application from mobile phone to Bluetooth to Wi-Fi as well as Radar systems and Satellite communication. With advancements in communication technology and application of 3G, 4G and the newly launched 5G systems, RF and Microwave Engineering is an important field of study under Electronics and Communications Engineering.

This course is offered as a specialisation in Master of Technology under the department of Electronics and Communications Engineering across popular engineering colleges in India. It prepares candidates to design and conduct independent research in Microwave communications and construct Smart Antennas for smooth communication. Professionals trained in this course are highly required in Space Research Organisations and Meteorology Departments who deal with satellite communication for their work.

The course structure of M.Tech in RF and Microwave Engineering is similar to M.Tech Radar and Microwave Engineering as well as M.Tech in Microwave Engineering. It provides wide range of opportunities to professionals who are trained in using modern engineering tools to design circuits and assemble satellite arrays. 

Important Facts- RF and Microwave Engineering

  • Eligibility Criteria- Candidates aspiring to pursue M.Tech in RF and Microwave Engineering must have completed B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from a recognised university. They must have cleared national-level or state-level entrance exams for admissions to postgraduate courses.
  • Course Fees- Government colleges have an average fee structure of INR 50,000- INR 2 lakh per annum, whereas private colleges have an average fee structure of INR 1 lakh- INR 3 lakh per annum.
  • Learning Outcomes- Candidates after completing this specialised course shall be able to conduct their independent research on RF and Microwave technology, design circuits and create array and circuit models using computer software. They will learn about the application of Advanced Satellite and Mobile Communication and Advanced Electromagnetism in the field of RF and Microwave Engineering
  • Scope and Career Opportunities- This course provides diverse career opportunities, wherein professionals can work in various multinational telecommunication companies such as Nokia, Qualcomm, Verizon or space research organisations such as SpaceX, ISRO, NASA etc. They can work as Electrical Engineers, RF Engineers, Research and Development Engineer and Design Engineer.

Semester 1

Details

Microwave Semiconductor Devices

The course introduces to the material properties of semiconductors, applications of microwave transistors and diodes and functioning of transferred electron devices and transit-time devices.

Antennas and Diversity

Learners understand the design of aperture antennas which are used for wireless communication, characteristics of dielectric resonator antenna and smart antennas.

Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering

This course deals with the types and properties of waves, cylindrical and spherical wave function and microwave networks.

Electromagnetic Interference & Electromagnetic Compatibility

The course introduces learners to the electromagnetic interference, conducted and radiated emission and susceptibility to determine electromagnetic compatibility.

Semester 2

Microwave and mm-wave Integrated Circuits

Learners are introduced to monolithic microwave (mm) integrated circuits, various elements in passive circuits and semiconductor circuits.

RF Circuit Design

It introduces to the components of a basic RF circuit, filter and biasing networks. It also teaches how to design a RF transistor amplifier and RF oscillators.

Numerical Techniques in Electromagnetics

It deals with the numerical methods to solve electromagnetic problems such as Finite Difference Time Domain, Moments Method, Finite Element and Monte Carlo Method.

Microwave Integrated Circuit Lab

It consists of experiments such as designing a microstrip low pass filter, phase shifters, coupled line coupler, microstrip transistor oscillator etc.

Semester 3

Satellite Based Wireless Communication

This is an introductory course on satellite communication and earth satellites. It deals with the propagation on satellite-earth paths and types of satellite networks.

Millimetre Wave Wireless Communication

It introduces to the challenges faced in implementing MM-Wave, radio wave propagation of MM-Wave and the use of antennas and array for MM-Wave appliances.

Microwave Measurement and Material Characterisation

It deals with the various materials used in microwave transmission and their characteristics. It also deals with the methods for characterisation of materials such as Reflection Method, Resonator Method, Resonant Perturbation Method and Planar-Circuit Method.

Semester 4

Thesis

Candidates have to submit a thesis on any research topic related to the course justifying skills acquired during the programme. This is a compulsory course which candidates have to submit for successful completion of the course.

The course deals with the introduction to metamaterials and their realisation through resonant and non-resonant approaches.

Radar Signal Analysis

It provides insight to the radar systems and methods of detecting targets and integrating pulse. It also deals with the radar clutter and Doppler array

RF Microelectronics Circuit Design

This course deals with the RF frequency and its response to MOSFET and the basic principles of RF design.

Advanced Array Synthesis

This course provides an overview on antennas and antenna arrays, various structures of arrays such as linear, planar or conformal and the application of ORAMA computer tool in creating arrays.

RF Micro-Electro-Mechanical System

Candidates learn basics of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and designing micro machined components.

Microwave Photonics

It deals with the basic principles and components of microwave photonics and the limitations of signal processing through microwave photonics.

Modern Optimisation Techniques

Learners understand the methods and techniques of classical optimisation and single-objective evolutionary optimisation.

Mixed Signal VLSI Design

It introduces the basic principles of sampling and aliasing and the application of data converters and analog and digital filters.

  • GATE- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted for admissions to postgraduate and doctoral courses in top Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science.
