The GATE 2025 Civil Engineering (CE1) Shift 1 exam was successfully conducted on February 16 in the forenoon session (9:30 AM - 12:30 PM). Candidates found the overall difficulty level easy to moderate, though certain sections featured unconventional questions requiring critical thinking. Read below to know more about GATE 2025 CE1 detailed paper analysis, difficulty level, types of questions asked and more.

GATE 2025 Feb 16 Civil Engineering (Shift 1) Exam Overview

The CE1 paper followed the standard GATE pattern, comprising Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Notably, this year’s paper had the highest number of MSQs ever seen in a GATE Civil Engineering exam, making it a unique challenge for aspirants.

GATE 2025 CE Section-Wise Analysis

  • General Aptitude & Mathematics: These sections were reported to be straightforward, allowing candidates to score well with fundamental conceptual clarity.
  • Structural Analysis & Environmental Engineering: Candidates observed tricky and unconventional questions in these sections, requiring an in-depth understanding of concepts rather than formula-based solutions.
  • Transportation & Geotechnical EngineeringThese sections featured unexpected and unconventional questions, making them more challenging compared to previous years. Overall, the GATE 2025 Feb 16 CE shift 1 was easy to moderate.

Expected Cutoff & Candidate Reactions

Given the moderate difficulty level and the introduction of more MSQs, experts predict that the cutoff might be slightly lower than last year. However, the normalization process will ultimately determine the final cutoff. Many candidates expressed that while the paper had tricky parts, the direct nature of Mathematics and Aptitude questions provided some relief.

The GATE CE1 2025 paper tested candidates on both conceptual understanding and analytical skills, particularly with the high number of MSQs and unconventional subject-specific questions. As candidates await the official answer key and results, those appearing for the CE2 shift or future GATE exams should focus on practising MSQs and conceptual clarity in key engineering topics. The GATE 2025 official answer key is expected to be released in the last week of Feb 2025 and the GATE 2025 results will be announced on March 19, 2025

All The Best!

Q:   Can I join IISc without JEE Main?
A:

The answer to this question depends on the course you are applying at IISC.

For Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme, aspirants are offered admission based on JEE Main score. Hoewever, for BSc programme admission,  JEE is not compulsory. Candidates with a valid score in IISER Aptitude Test can also get admission. For other courses such as MTech, MSc and PhD, JEE Main is not required for admission at Indian Institute of Science (IISC).

Q:   How much rank should I score to get IIT Madras?
A:

Hello aspirant!

IIT Madras BTech cutoff 2024 got released across multiple specialisations. Based on the last-round seat allotment, to get into IIT Madras, students must score between 159 and, 10682 for the General AII India category. In addition to that, for getting into BTech in CSE, you must have a rank upto 159. Also, B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering is one of the most competitive BTech specialisations at IIT Madras. So, considering the last-round cutoff, if you are seeking admission to Indian Institute of Technology Madras, you must secure a maximum rank upto 10682.
