IIT Guwahati Suicide Sparks Demands More Counsellors and Reforms in Placement Policies
IIT Guwahati Updates: The third student suicide this year sparked protests, IIT Guwahati is considering demands for a revised attendance policy, academic flexibility, and changes in the placement cell.
IIT Guwahati: Following the third student suicide on campus this year, which led to widespread protests, IIT Guwahati is addressing student demands for a revised attendance policy, academic flexibility, and reforms in the placement cell. The recent death of a 21-year-old BTech student from Uttar Pradesh marked the second suicide at IIT Guwahati in just one month. During an open house held after the tragedy, students called for the resignation of several senior administrative members, including the dean of academic affairs.
Demands for Relaxation in Policies
During last week's meeting, led by Director Professor Jalihal, students called for a relaxation of the 75% attendance requirement needed to appear for final exams. This demand for policy revision has been a longstanding issue among IIT students. Among the demands raised at the meeting were changes to the placement cell, with students requesting representatives from all departments to ensure equal job opportunities for everyone. Currently, the cell has representatives from only seven departments.
Counselling Services at IITs
While IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and IIT Bombay have launched counselling services to address stress and prevent suicides, IIT Guwahati operates a Centre for Holistic Well-being. However, students are calling for an increase in the number of counsellors and a complete overhaul of the centre's operations.
Suicide Cases at IITs
The Central Government has informed Parliament that at least 37 students have died by suicide across IITs in the past five years. So far this year, nine IIT students have taken their own lives, five from undergraduate programmes and the remaining from postgraduate courses.
