IIT Madras and CMC Vellore Introduce PLUTO

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and CMC Vellore have collaborated to develop PLUTO, an indigenous robot designed to revolutionize hand rehabilitation. This cost-effective and portable device is specifically engineered to address the therapeutic needs of patients recovering from conditions such as strokes, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and post-surgery complications. Licensed and commercialised by Thryv Rehab Solutions, PLUTO offers advanced capabilities, delivering precise therapeutic movements while providing real-time feedback to ensure optimal recovery outcomes.

Its innovative design prioritises both affordability and ease of use, making it an accessible solution for healthcare providers and patients alike. With the potential to significantly improve the quality of rehabilitation services, PLUTO stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between engineering and medical science to create impactful solutions for critical healthcare challenges.

With over 1,000 patients already benefiting, this modular device addresses accessibility gaps by bringing therapy to rehabilitation centers, clinics, hospitals, and even homes. Its compact design and plug-and-train functionality ensure seamless use, while its affordability positions it as a transformative innovation in healthcare.

PLUTO was developed by a team of researchers led by Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head of the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development at IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering at CMC Vellore and inventor Dr. Aravind Nehrujee. This innovative assistive technology exemplifies the potential of academic research to create meaningful, real-world solutions, highlighting the transformative impact of interdisciplinary collaboration.
