Commonly asked questions
Q:   My JEE Main rank is above 1 lakh, can I get IIIT via the JoSAA counselling process?
A:

It is a bit difficult. IIITs admit candidates with JEE Main ranks up to around 54,000 in the open and gender-neutral categories. They primarily offer popular courses such as Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology to candidates with ranks above 25,000 in JEE Mains.

Q:   If I got a rank above 9 lakhs in JEE Mains, can I still apply for JoSAA counselling to get the best colleges under this rank?
A:

A JEE rank of more than 70,000 is typically regarded as low, and applicants frequently give up on getting into the NITs and B.Tech programmes of their choice. The good news is that a number of universities, such as NITs and IIITs, accept JEE Main low scores up to 2,000,000. Based on the data from the previous year, NIT Mizoram has the lowest cutoff with a closing rank of 678406 for B.Tech. Civil Engineering (Gender-Neutral). It is followed by NIT Sikkim, which has a JEE Main rank of 639272 for B.Tech. EEE, and NIT Agartala, which has a JEE Main rank of 287950 for B.Tech. Biotech & Bio Chem Engineering. Therefore a rank of 9 Lacs can also have a chance of getting into colleges.

Q:   What is the lowest rank required to get a seat through JoSAA or CSAB counseling?
A:

The least rank to get a seat through JoSAA or CSAB counselling can vary greatly depending on the course and the institute. However, here are some general observations:

For JoSAA counselling, candidates can get admission in NITs, IIITs, IITs, and GFTIs1. While admission is possible up to a 3 Lacs rank in JEE Main, securing admission in popular NITs and B.Tech specializations is limited for a low rank in JEE Main (above 1,00,000).
After the conclusion of six rounds of JoSAA counselling, two special rounds are conducted by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for the vacant seats1. The list of vacant seats shall be displayed in advance so that the candidates can plan college options and participate in the counselling process.

Please note that these are approximate figures and the actual cutoff may vary each year based on several factors such as the difficulty level of the JEE Main exam, number of applicants, number of seats available, and the category of the candidate.

For the most accurate information, I recommend checking the official JoSAA or CSAB websites during the admission season as they release the category-wise opening and closing ranks after each round of counselling.

Check out this article for more details: Best Colleges for Low JEE Main Rank/Scores

Q:   Can get into any CFTI in JoSAA counselling if my JEE Main rank is above 1 lakh?
A:

Yes, there are chances. CFTIs admit JEE Main candidates with ranks up to round 10,50,000 in the open and gender-neutral categories. They offer courses like Food Technology and Management, Dairy Engineering, Handloom and Textile Technology, and others to candidates with ranks above 1 lakh.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is a special round in JoSAA?
A:
Special Vacant Seats Filling Round, also known as the special round is conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board CSAB to fill the vacant seats at NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other GFTIs (Except IITs) after completion of all the JoSAA Rounds. The purpose of the special round is to fill the remaining vacant seats in the participating institutes. Candidates who are eligible for the special round have to register and fill their choices again. The seat allocation in the special round is based on the candidate's rank and the availability of seats.
Q:   How is CSAB different from JoSAA?
A:

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) and JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) are both involved in the seat allocation process for engineering admissions in IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. However, via JoSAA seat are allotted to all available seats in IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. But via CSAB seat is allotted only at NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs against the vacant seats left after JoSAA counselling last round based on JEE Main scores.

Q:   Which are the colleges for doing B.Tech CSE via JoSAA counselling?
A:

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority JoSAA is responsible for conducting the counselling process for admission to B.Tech courses in various colleges across India. According to an article on Shiksha. Com, JoSAA colleges include 23 IITs, 32 NITs, 26 IIITs and 33 GFTIs located across India. You can get Computer Science Engineering (CSE) in IITs, NITs and other colleges under JoSAA counselling. CSE is one of the most preferred B.Tech programmes in IITs by candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced over the last three years.

Q:   Is there a possibility that a candidate's name appears in one or more rank lists of JoSAA?
A:

Yes, it is very possible that a candidate's name appears on more than one rank list. It depends on the candidate's category and physical disability status, along with his or her performance in the entrance exam. It is important to note that the counselling process is based on the candidate's All India Rank (AIR) or Common Rank List (CRL) as per the respective rank list. The counselling process follows the order of priority of the rank lists, which is specified by JoSAA.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Can I get NIT with 95 percentile in JEE Main?
A:

It is possible for you to secure a seat in an NIT (National Institute of Technology), although it may not guarantee your preferred branch or institute. If your percentile is above 96, your chances of getting into a respectable NIT increases, but you may need to compromise on your branch selection. However, if you aim for a decent NIT with a preferred branch in the core field, you would need to score above 97.5%. On the other hand, if your goal is to get admission to a top college with the CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) branch, your score would need to be higher than 99.4%.

Q:   I have 22757 rank and 323488 SSC rank in JEE Mains under SC category. Can I get admission in any NIT or IIIT?
A:

According to your category rank, you may get these colleges. This prediction is based on last year's cutoff, maybe this year's cutoff will be changed. This will also depend on your domicile. A list of colleges is listed below:

  • National Institute of Technology NIT Rourkela
  • National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal
  • Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi
  • National Institute of Technology Durgapur
  • National Institute of Technology Warangal
  • National Institute of Technology Calicut
  • National Institute of Technology Trichy
Q:   Can I get a seat in any NIT in 5th or 6th round for B.Arch?
A:

As per the cutoffs as released by JoSSA, with a 1564 SC rank, you will not get B.Arch at NIT in Round 5. So far, the closing rank has been around 300 and less at most NITs for the SC category without home state quota. Therefore, you may have some chance in rounds 6 or 7 to get an NIT seat allocated for B.Arch but you will need home-state quota. For example, if you have a home-state quota of Himachal Pradesh, you may be assigned a seat at the NIT, Hamirpur, in Round 6. The closing rank for round 5 in this NIT is 1287 for HS quota.

Q:   Am I eligible to appear for JEE Advanced next year if I do not join the seat allocated via JoSAA Counselling?
A:

If you do not complete the JoSAA reporting process, you will be eligible for appearing in JEE (Advanced) in the subsequent year provided you meet all other eligibility requirements.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Which NIT or IIIT can I get with an EWS rank of 25011 in JEE Mains? Which counseling do I need to attend: JoSAA or CSAB?
A:

You stand a decent chance of being admitted into a number of NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) if you enter JEE Mains with an EWS (Economically Weaker Section) rank of 25011. You should anticipate being accepted into NITs, which are popular and competitively regarded institutes. In a similar vein, IIITs may have possibilities at institutions that are not among the best but yet provide high-quality education. Because CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) manages admissions for NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) based on JEE Main ranks, you must attend CSAB counselling. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and ISM Dhanbad admissions are the main responsibilities of JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).

Q:   I got 70900 rank in JEE Mains. Can I expect JKIAPT in JOSAA counselling?
A:

Your chances of being admitted to JKIAPT (Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Advanced Studies, Palwal) during JoSAA counseling with a JEE Mains rank of 70,900 depend on a number of variables, such as category, seat availability, and the institute's cutoff trends. The JKIAPT closing ranks in previous years have varied greatly amongst branches and categories. Check the most recent cutoffs and think about taking part in the counseling process; if the cutoffs match your rank, you may have a chance.

Q:   If I've been allotted a seat through JOSAA but failed to get 75% in boards. Will I be eligible after giving improvement?
A:

If you have been allotted a seat through JOSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) but did not meet the eligibility criteria of 75% marks in your board exams, you can still become eligible by improving your board exam scores through a subsequent attempt. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Give Improvement Exam: You can appear for the board exams again to improve your scores. Typically, the best of the two attempts is considered by many educational institutions for admission purposes.
  2. Meet Eligibility Criteria: Once you achieve the required 75% aggregate (or the equivalent in your board’s grading system) in your improvement exam, you will meet the eligibility criteria set by JOSAA.
  3. Notify JOSAA.
Q:   Which counseling should I appear to get a good college and good branch: JoSAA, CSAB or AKTU?
A:

To secure admission in a good college and preferred branch, you should prioritize appearing for JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling if you have qualified in JEE Main or JEE Advanced. JoSAA manages the centralized seat allocation process for admissions to 110 participating institutes, including prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs across India.

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is specifically for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs for candidates who did not participate or were not allotted a seat through JoSAA.

AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) counseling is relevant for admissions to colleges affiliated with AKTU in Uttar Pradesh.

Considering JoSAA will give you access to a wide range of institutions and branches based on your JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank, making it a preferable choice for securing admission in a good college and desired branch.

Commonly asked questions

Q:   What would be the best options in JoSAA counseling with a general rank of more than 2 lakh in JEE Mains?
A:

A general rank of more than 2 Lacs in JEE Main, your options in JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling will primarily focus on selecting engineering colleges and programs where the cutoff ranks typically extend beyond the top ranks, include a wide range of institutes and branches in your preferred list. This increases your chances of securing a seat in a college that aligns with your preferences and matches your rank.Look into NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) that historically have lower cutoff ranks or more available seats in later rounds of counseling.

Q:   Which colleges for B.Tech CSE can I get with 49111 rank in JEE Mains through JoSAA?

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Can I get NIT with 87 percentile in JEE Main?
A:
No, you cannot get a seat in NIT with the 87 percentile, especially for popular branches such as Computer Science, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering. Candidates need to score more than 95 percentile to get into an NIT. However, it's important to note that cutoffs can vary depending on several factors, such as the difficulty level of the exam, the number of applicants, and the availability of seats.
Q:   I have 22757 rank and 323488 SSC rank in JEE Mains under SC category. Can I get admission in any NIT or IIIT?
A:

According to your category rank, you may get these colleges. This prediction is based on last year's cutoff, maybe this year's cutoff will be changed. This will also depend on your domicile. A list of colleges is listed below:

  • National Institute of Technology NIT Rourkela
  • National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal
  • Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi
  • National Institute of Technology Durgapur
  • National Institute of Technology Warangal
  • National Institute of Technology Calicut
  • National Institute of Technology Trichy
Q:   To secure a seat in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) under the SC category, what rank should I aim for in the JEE Advanced?
A:
For the SC (Scheduled Caste) category, a lower rank is generally required compared to the General category for admission to the IITs. However, the exact rank required can vary depending on factors such as the number of available seats, the difficulty of the exam, and the performance of other candidates. With a total of 2291 seats reserved for SC category students across various IITs, there are certainly opportunities for you to secure a seat in one of the IITs with your category rank.
Q:   What is the JEE Advanced closing rank for IIT?
A:
Closing rank is different even for the courses/engineering branches offered within an IIT. But overall, students must have a JEE Advanced rank within the top 30,000 to have a seat in any of the IITs across the country. The closing ranks can range from a few hundred to several thousand, depending on factors like the number of available seats, the performance of candidates, and the category (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc. ) of the candidates.
