Ignoring the Official IIT JAM Syllabus During Preparation

Students often make a major mistake when preparing for IIT JAM 2026 examination by not following IIT JAM syllabus properly. Most students use various study materials but do not verify what is included in the syllabus.

IIT JAM syllabus has a very rigid layout and does not deviate much. If students spend their time studying topics that are unrelated or have a very low priority, then their precious pre-exam study time will be wasted. Therefore, students should segment the syllabus into smaller sections, match each of these sections with their daily study schedule and use a syllabus-centric approach to make sure that each hour of study contributes directly toward their IIT JAM 2026 preparation.

The JAM test paper for Biotechnology consists of four subjects - Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Aspirants can go through IIT JAM Biotechnology syllabus below:

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   How can I prepare for IIT JAM exam?
A:

Students can plan their preparation through the exam syllabus. Check the syllabus to know what the important topics are. Then gather the required resources like the best books, previous year question paper, and mock test. Students must solve the IIT JAM question paper after completing 70% of the syllabus to keep track of their preparation.

Q:   How can I get admission in IIT Mumbai?
A:

IIT Bombay admission to all the courses is entrance-based (Except for EMBA, where admission is merit-based and performance in the interview round). The IIT Bombay admission process includes the application process, selection round, cutoff, merit list or counselling and other steps. For BTech, candidates have to clear JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Further for other courses such as MTech, MBA, MSc, BDes, and MDes, aspirants need to clear GATE, CAT, IITJAM, UCEED, and CEED, respectively to qualify for further admission rounds.

Q:   What is the difficulty level of IIT JAM examination?
A:

The difficulty level of IIT JAM is moderate to tough. The difficulty level for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is tougher as compared to the IIT JAM subjects of Economics, Biotechnology and Geology.

If we compare the difficulty level of IIT JAM examination with CUET PG exam, ISI Admission test, NEST exam, IISER Entrance examination, then it will be found that IIT JAM examination is comparetively tougher than the other top colleges/ universities entrance examination.

Learning New Concepts Too Close to IIT JAM 2026 Exam

An additional typical mistake during last-minute preparation for IIT JAM 2026 Exam is studying material that one has not studied before. Although it is normal to be curious, trying to learn something new and unknown so close to the exam will only add to the stress level and produce confusion.

Rather than attempting to learn new information, during the last 30 days of preparing for IIT JAM Exam 2026, concentrate on reviewing the heaviest weighted sections and re-enforcing your basic skills as well as applying concepts that you have already learned. Research has shown that the best way to increase accuracy, particularly when dealing with numerical problems, is to switch from learning mode to applying mode.

Poor Use of Previous Year Questions in IIT JAM 2026 Preparation

When preparing for JAM 2026, most students utilise last year's exam question papers to help them practice rather than gain knowledge on what the exam will cover. This is incorrect thinking.

By looking at the examination papers from previous years, students can see what the most common themes and concepts are, along with any "trends" throughout the examination. A careful analysis of past year papers will assist in identifying the 20% of subjects responsible for 80% of the exam questions. To maximize your time during the preparation process for JAM 2026, students should study the previous year's question paper by subject, comprehend and reanalyse the reasons behind each solution, and review the subject areas identified as their weakest areas. The reverse learning method has proven to be very successful in preparing for JAM 2026, especially if you are just starting to prepare late.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Till which date can I fill the choices in JoSAA counselling?
A:

The dates for JoSAA counselling 2026 choice filling will be announced once the result of JEE Main 2026 is declared. Candidates can fill choices only during the choice filling period. Also, candidates need to lock their choices before the last date.

Q:   What is the selection criteria for admission to BSc at IIT Bombay?
A:
All the IIT aspirants have to sit for JEE Main and afterward, JEE Advanced. Only the top 2, 24,000 scores in JEE Main will become eligible to sit for JEE Advanced. The candidates must have secured at least 75% marks or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th Class Examination conducted by respective boards. The Admissions into IIT Bombay is done through JoSAA on the basis of JEE Advanced scores.
Q:   How to crack IIT JAM 2026 exam in first attempt?
A:

Students can crack the IIT JAM exam 2026 on their first attempt by planning a proper preparation strategy. Follow IIT JAM exam syllabus to identify the important topics for the paper they are appearing for.  Solving the previous year question paper will help to identify the most important topics and get familiar with the exam difficulty level. Students can practice the IIT JAM mock test for self-assessment.

Skipping Mock Tests and Analysis for IIT JAM 2026 Exam

Candidates often make another mistake when attempting mock tests: not completing a performance analysis for each mock test taken. Completing a mock test is not enough on its own to aid an aspirant’s preparation for IIT JAM 2026 Exam.

When students are taking IIT JAM 2026 mock test, candidates should review the results of each mock test to locate areas where they went wrong, including errors in calculations, mismanagement of their time, or less accuracy as they progressed through the later parts of the test. Familiarity with the format of a computer screen will also help candidates become accustomed to the computer interface for taking IIT JAM 2026 Exam. This regular and thorough practice of solving mock tests combined with an analysis of the results, will provide candidates with a high level of readiness for the written portion of their IIT JAM 2026 examination.

Neglecting Mental Readiness and Strategy in JAM 2026 Preparation

A vast number of people preparing for exams concentrate entirely on their academic capabilities and disregard preparing mentally for their exams. Stress, anxiety, and a lack of confidence can create unnecessary errors on an exam date, even if someone has studied adequately for it.

In addition to preparing academically for the JAM 2026 exams, candidates should also prepare themselves mentally by using relaxation methods, practicing a balanced daily/weekly routine before taking an exam, and preparing their logistics for exam day beforehand. Preparing your important documents and reading through the exam instructions prior to taking the exam can help reduce last-minute stress. All of these factors contribute to creating mentally prepared students who will score significantly higher on their exams than other students.
