GATE MTech Admission Process at IITs and NITs
Admission to MTech programs at NITs and IITs are solely through GATE Score. Candidates must qualify GATE in order to be considered for MTech admission at any IIT or NIT.
After qualifying GATE, candidates will have to register for the online counselling to get admission in the institute. Counselling for IITs is organized by COAP whereas for NIT, the counselling is managed by CCMT.
Commonly asked questions
The highest GATE cutoff score for NIT M.Tech admission typically ranges from 800 to 850 in the first round. Some of the top NITs include NIT Surathkal, NIT Trichy, and NIT Warangal, accept admissions with GATE score 800 above for branches like EC, CS, ME, and EE.
Qualified candidates have to register at the CCMT portal to participate in the GATE counselling. The counselling process will begin in June/July.
The cutoff score in GATE is the minimum mark required to qualify for the exam. The conducting body releases the qualifying cutoff along with result. It determines, whether a candidate is eligible to participate in the counselling round or not.
The cutoff score in GATE varies every year (category-wise), depending on the number of students registered, difficulty level of the question paper, and previous year's trends. The GATE cutoff score are mainly of two types - admission and qualifying cutoff.
Indian Institute of Technology will release GATE cutoff 2026 along with result. The IITG GATE 2026 result date is March 19. The conducting body will declare the exam result and cutoff for all 30 subjects. The cutoff for GATE 2026 will be available category-wise. Candidates securing the minimum cutoff will be eligible to participate in counselling.
Note: The minimum qualifying cutoff will be different for all subjects.
Admission to MTech Programs at IITs for Students Graduated from IIT
Students who are pursuing/completed their BTech/BS (4 year) course from any IIT and have an average CGPA/CPI of 8.0 or higher can directly apply for MTech admission at any IIT without GATE score. IIT Graduates are waived off from appearing in GATE and can directly apply to the institute online. The admission will be provided by shortlisting candidates through an interview on the subject/course for which they are applying.
GATE Score vs Marks
Many candidates have doubts about GATE marks and score. It is to note that GATE score are normalized score, calculated out of 1000 whereas GATE marks are raw marks of the candidate out of 100.
Commonly asked questions
Based on the past-year's records and experts analysis, it is expected that the average expected cutoff for GATE exam 2026 can fall somewhere between 28 to 37 for general category, 26 to 28.3 marks for OBC-NCL/EWS category, and 27 -31 for SC/ST category.
The above cutoff mark can vary for each paper, depending on the question paper difficulty level and past cutoff trends.
Yes, it is expected that the GATE 2026 cutoff may increase compared to last year, for the following reasons -
Increase in the number of registered applicants.
Difficulty level of the question paper
Inclination towards newer branches, such as Data Science, Machine Learning, Quantum Tech, etc.
Due to the introduction of new and innovative programmes, there can be slight increase in the cutoff trend, especially for CSE, EE, EC, DA, CE and ME
The GATE 2025 cutoff of computer Science and information technology (category-wise) can be checked below -
- For general - 29.2
- OBC-NCL/EWS - 26.2
- SC/ST/PwD - 19.4
The cutoff is the minimum mark that is required for all candidates to qualify for the exam. IIT Guwahati will announce the GATE cutoff 2026 after the announcement of results.
